Manchester United are considering disciplinary action against defender Lisandro Martínez after he publicly criticised the club’s leadership following a Champions League defeat.
The Argentina international spoke out after United’s 2-0 loss to Atlético Madrid, expressing frustration over the lack of summer recruitment and specifically targeting technical director Jason Wilcox.
“We did a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top, more players to compete because many teams bring many players as well,” Martínez told Amazon Prime. “I expect more [investment]. 100%. I expect more from our technical director. Tonight it is easy to blame the coach, easy to say the players, but also we have to see other areas. You can’t keep changing, changing, changing the manager. What about other areas?”
He later reiterated his stance in a second interview, saying he would not “close my mouth” and calling for greater ambition from the club.
According to reports, club sources have described a fine as “inevitable.” Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano noted that Martínez is not the only player at the club who shares concerns about United’s summer recruitment and overall direction.
Martínez’s contract runs until June 2027, with an option for the club to extend it by one year to 2028. The prospect of a longer-term deal is now considered remote.
United face Leeds United in the Premier League on Sunday.
