Federal government on Friday declared Tuesday, August 25, a public holiday to mark Eid ul Mawlid, the celebration of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad.
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo made the announcement in a statement issued by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and worldwide on the occasion and urged them to reflect on the values associated with the Prophet.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” he said.
“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them.”
The minister called on citizens to use the celebration to pray for peace and national cohesion, describing unity as a collective responsibility. He also urged restraint and mutual respect during the festivities and wished the Muslim community a joyous and peaceful Eid.
Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property and sustaining peace across the country.
