The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 16 new academic programmes for Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), following the successful completion of the Commission’s resource verification exercise.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, announced the development on Thursday, September 24, 2026, during the University’s 35th Inaugural Lecture held at the ETF Auditorium.
Omenugha, who addressed the gathering virtually, said the approval followed the NUC’s recent verification of the infrastructure, facilities and other resources required for the commencement of academic activities in the programmes.
The NUC had deployed a verification team to the University in August to assess the available resources, a process which was a major requirement for securing approval and subsequently admitting students into the programmes.
Confirming the approval, the Vice-Chancellor said the University would commence the process of admitting students into the newly approved programmes without unnecessary delay.
The approved programmes are B.Sc. International Relations, B.Sc. Radiography, B.Sc. Software Engineering, B.Sc. Cyber Security, B.Sc. Data Science, B.Sc. Public Health, B.Sc. Project Management, B.Sc. Logistics and Supply Chain Management, B.Sc. Transport Management, B.Sc. Taxation, B.Sc. Procurement, B.Sc. Information Technology, B.EHS Environmental Health Sciences, O.D. Optometry and D.P.T. Physiotherapy.
The Vice-Chancellor also disclosed another development arising from her recent engagement with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China.
According to her, she attended the 77th Anniversary celebration of the People’s Republic of China in Abuja, an engagement she described as reflecting the growing visibility of COOU beyond Nigeria.
She said the engagement resulted in a pledge by the Chinese Embassy to provide the University with equipment worth $30,000 to support its development and advancement.
Omenugha said the development further underscored the University’s 3Vs mantra of Values, Viability and Visibility, which she said continues to guide its institutional engagements, partnerships and growth.
The Vice-Chancellor’s trip to Abuja also coincided with the date of the inaugural lecture and was connected with the conclusion of processes surrounding the approval of the 16 programmes, accounting for her physical absence from the event.
The 35th Inaugural Lecture was delivered by Prof. Charity Ifeyinwa Emelie at the ETF Auditorium.
The approval of the new programmes is expected to expand COOU’s academic offerings and provide prospective students with additional opportunities to pursue programmes in emerging and professional fields.
