Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on President Bola Tinubu to retire, saying the leader is tired and leading the country in the wrong direction.
Speaking in an interview aired on Channels Television on Sunday, Obi said the current president was no longer the same figure who once governed Lagos State.
“President Bola Tinubu is tired. He should be allowed to retire in peace and go home and rest. The Bola Tinubu that was governor is not the one who is now president,” Obi declared.
He added: “We’re heading in the wrong direction now. That’s why we need someone with the capacity to do the job. We need to do far more than we are doing now.”
Obi’s latest remarks follow an earlier appeal for Tinubu to resign, which he made after former British prime minister Keir Starmer announced his own resignation. The Labour Party politician had previously described Tinubu’s governance as a monumental failure.
The comments also come amid claims by former secretary to the government of the federation Babachir Lawal that Tinubu is not healthy enough to continue running the country.
Presidential spokespersons Bayo Onanuga and Daniel Bwala did not respond to requests for comment on Obi’s statements.
