Plice have arrested Ifechukwu Dennis, the man accused of originating an AI-generated voice note falsely attributed to President Bola Tinubu that sparked widespread controversy.
Presidential Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced the arrest on Thursday, describing it as the work of an Inspector-General of Police crack team.
“The IGP crack team has arrested Ifechukwu Dennis who originated the fake voice that he passed on to his gullible targets as President Tinubu’s voice,” Onanuga said on X.
The doctored audio, which circulated widely from May 27, featured a voice mimicking Tinubu making inflammatory claims about insecurity in the South-East, the 2023 election, and public suffering. It was initially linked to social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan.
Investigations later revealed that an unidentified person had manipulated VDM’s original video by overlaying the synthetic audio. The Presidency had earlier called for VDM’s prosecution over the clip.
Further details on the charges against Dennis were not immediately available.
