The Nigeria Police Force has summarily dismissed two officers and ordered their immediate prosecution following a fatal shooting incident in Effurun, Delta State, that sparked widespread public outrage.
The decision follows an internal disciplinary inquiry, known as an orderly room trial, which found the personnel guilty of professional misconduct and the unlawful use of firearms. The shooting, which occurred during a heated confrontation at a checkpoint, resulted in the death of a civilian and left others injured.
”The Force will not tolerate any act of brutality or the extrajudicial use of lethal force against the citizens we are sworn to protect,” Delta State Police Command spokesperson Bright Edafe stated. “The dismissal of these officers serves as a clear warning that there is no place for trigger-happy personnel in the modern Nigeria Police Force.”
The dismissed officers, whose identities were released following the verdict, have been stripped of their uniforms and accoutrements. They are expected to be arraigned in a conventional court of law on charges of murder and attempted murder later this week.
The incident had led to localized protests in the Effurun and Warri axis, with youths demanding justice and an end to police harassment. Community leaders welcomed the swift disciplinary action but called for broader reforms to ensure such tragedies are not repeated.
”We commend the Commissioner of Police for acting quickly, but we want to see a conviction,” a local human rights advocate remarked. “Justice must not only be swift; it must be transparent to restore the confidence of the people in the law.”
The Delta State Command confirmed that the victims’ families have been contacted and assured that the legal process will be followed to its logical conclusion.
The Inspector General of Police has reportedly ordered a review of specialized patrol operations in the South-South region to reinforce strict adherence to the rules of engagement and the sanctity of human life.
