Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has warned women against assuming that beauty, wealth or other perceived advantages can guarantee a man’s loyalty in a relationship.
In a lengthy social media post, Edochie argued that women should not build their confidence around the belief that they have something that makes them indispensable to a man.
She said women have no monopoly over beauty, social status or intelligence, stressing that relationships can change despite what one partner may believe they possess.
“No woman has a monopoly over beauty. No woman has a monopoly over class. No woman has a monopoly over brains,” she wrote.
Edochie also questioned the confidence of women who believe they have permanently secured a wealthy or influential man, comparing such expectations to keeping a “big fish” in an aquarium.
“You think you have finally caught the big fish and that he will now remain in your personal aquarium forever?” she asked.
The actress warned that placing one’s entire confidence in the belief that a partner will never look elsewhere could amount to self-deception.
“That is why building your entire confidence around ‘I have won’ is one of the most dangerous forms of self-deception,” she said.
Her comments also touched on relationships involving married men, with Edochie suggesting that a man who leaves his wife for another woman could potentially repeat the same behaviour in a future relationship.
She urged women to recognise that there are always other people who may possess qualities similar to, or beyond, those that initially attracted a partner.
Edochie further invoked the idea of karma, saying consequences can sometimes arrive sooner than expected.
“Sometimes, you don’t even need to wait long enough to see the consequences of your own actions,” she wrote.
She concluded that life could eventually force people to confront assumptions they once considered certain.
“Life will just turn around and give you a practical examination on everything you thought you had mastered,” she added.
