A senator has warned that citizens could face a significantly higher tax burden from 2027, claiming a new tax policy has already been passed but will only be implemented after the next general election.
Senator Ireti Kingibe made the remarks in a video while addressing voters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). She said many Nigerians were unaware of the legislation approved by the National Assembly.
According to Kingibe, the policy would require people to pay 25 per cent of their earnings in tax.
“They passed the policy, but fear won’t let them implement it until after the elections,” she said.
Her comments have drawn attention to the timing of tax reforms and their potential impact on households already under economic pressure.
Independent verification of the specific rate and scope of any such tax law remains necessary, as actual tax liability typically depends on income type, thresholds and other provisions in the relevant legislation.
