Senate has broadened its investigation into the Safe Schools Initiative and granted a three-week extension to its ad-hoc committee, now including key agencies such as TETFund, NELFUND, UBEC, the Humanitarian Ministry and NSIPA.
The expansion follows a motion by committee chairman Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who cited interconnected funding and operational issues. “The issues surrounding student security, educational infrastructure funding and social intervention schemes for vulnerable learners across the country are deeply interwoven,” Kalu stated.
The committee will now evaluate financial flows, accountability and project implementation across these bodies to strengthen oversight and transparency. Kalu noted time constraints had delayed some visits, justifying the extension.
The probe was launched amid concerns over school attacks and fund utilisation despite substantial investments since the 2014 Chibok abduction. The Senate aims to deliver a comprehensive report on educational safety and intervention programmes.
