President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his working vacation in Europe by several days and is now expected to return home at the weekend, the presidency said on Monday.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga announced the change in a statement. “President Tinubu will return to Nigeria at the weekend, following the extension of his working vacation by a few days,” the presidency said.
Tinubu left Nigeria on August 30 for a planned three-week working vacation. He spent about a week in London before travelling to Paris, where he met French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bollore.
Despite his absence, the presidency said Tinubu had remained in contact with developments at home and continued to direct government affairs. One decision attributed to him during the leave was the ordering of an independent panel to investigate the deaths of 37 illegal miners in Minna after their detention by security officials.
Vice President Kashim Shettima has represented the president at some official functions and departed for New York on September 20 to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly, where he is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement. Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume will continue to stand in for Tinubu at official events while the president remains abroad.
