# The Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor says
Anambra State Government intervention on erosion and flooding will henceforth depend on community action.
Dr. Mefor while speaking on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at the Idemili North Local Government Stakeholders Summit on Environment, with focus on flooding, erosion, waste management and security,
maintained that the era of impunity on environment and waste management is over.
The summit, chaired by the local government chairman of Idemili North Local Government Area, Hon. Stanley Nkwoka, was attended by the Commissioner for Environment, Chief Clems Aguiyi, Presidents-Generals of communities, youth leaders, market leaders and other stakeholders.
According to Mefor, Executive Council Meeting, held on Monday, unveiled a new Citizen Code of Conduct on Environment to tackle environmental degradation across the state.
He stated that the Council agreed on three key actions, which include full enforcement of Environmental Laws, mandatory catchment pits for all buildings and community action as prerequisite for government intervention.
He explained that the Ministry of Environment will soon commence physical inspection of buildings for compliance, with a possible grace period for defaulters, adding that every community must constitute an environmental team to identify and report erosion sites and coordinate remedial action.
Dr Mefor further announced that as part of activities to mark the 31st anniversary of Anambra State, Governor Soludo has directed the production of up to 20 documentaries on environmental degradation and erosion in the state “so that the whole world, not just Nigeria, can see the scale of the problem”.
# Anambra State Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Mr Patrick Agha Mba, has reaffirmed his commitment to youth empowerment, describing recognition as a call to greater responsibility and service.
Agha Mba made the commitment while receiving the Anambra State Town Unions Council (ASTUC) Youth Ladies Outstanding Leadership and Youth Development Champion Award in Awka.
The Commissioner expressed appreciation to the organisation for recognising his contributions to youth development, saying the honour would further strengthen his resolve to deliver on the mandate entrusted to the ministry by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
According to Agha Mba, the administration remains deliberate in its focus on young people through investments in skills development, employment, entrepreneurship, youth engagement, sports and opportunities for self reliance.
Honourable Agha Mba commended ASTUC Youth, the youth wing of the Anambra State Town Unions Council, for its partnership with the ministry, particularly through its volunteers, supervisors and grassroots mobilisers involved in programmes such as the Close the Gap Initiative and 1Youth2Skills Plus.
He recalled his association with the pioneer ASTUC Youth President, Sir Ossy Ozalagba, under whom he served as Pioneer First Vice President when the Youth Ladies Wing was established.
The commissioner described the participation of young women in youth development as indispensable, urging the ASTUC Youth Ladies to continue to organise, mobilise and provide leadership in their communities.
# The Anambra State Ministry of Culture, Entertainment and Tourism has partnered with Heritage & Culture Africa to promote the Iri Ji Grand Finale, an initiative aimed at preserving Igbo cultural heritage while using the New Yam Festival to promote tourism and community development.
The partnership was highlighted during the launch of the Iri Ji Grand Finale project in Awka, which featured panel discussions on culture, heritage and their role in development.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Mr. Udoji Amedu, urged young people in the state to embrace and promote the cultural values of Ndi Anambra.
He described Iri Ji as an important cultural tradition across Igbo communities, marking the beginning of the yam harvest season, reflecting the agricultural heritage and identity of the people.
Mr. Amedu said the initiative was in line with the Ministry’s cultural development plans, adding that arrangements were underway for a broader state wide celebration involving the 21 Local Government Areas(LGA) and communities across Anambra.
# The Anambra State Government has intensified enforcement of physical planning regulations at Onitsha Main Market with the demolition of structures along Johnson Street.
The exercise, carried out by officials of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, targeted structures identified as contravening approved physical planning and development requirements.
The ministry said the enforcement was aimed at reclaiming improperly utilised spaces, improving the physical environment of the market and ensuring that developments within the commercial hub conformed with approved planning standards.
It said the exercise was also part of the government’s broader efforts to restore order and support the ongoing regeneration of the market.
According to the ministry, the action would help create a safer and more organised environment for traders, customers and other users of the market.
The ministry urged traders, developers, property owners and other stakeholders operating within the market to obtain the necessary approvals and comply with planning requirements to avoid enforcement action.
# The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna-Oji Ama, has advised youths to shun drug abuse and crime, urging them to channel their energy into positive and productive activities.
CP Ama gave the advice when the leadership of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra State Chapter, paid him a visit in his office ahead of the association’s forthcoming Sports Week.
The two-day event, themed “Sports for Peace and Economic Empowerment,” is scheduled to hold on August 20 and 21 at the Cosmilla Hotel Sports Arena, Awka.
The Commissioner said sports play an important role in promoting mental and physical alertness while providing a positive avenue for youths to channel their energy.
He also called for the cooperation of the media and residents of Anambra State in the collective effort to make the state safer and free from crime.
Earlier, the Chairman of SWAN in Anambra State, Chimezie Anaso, said the event was designed to promote physical fitness, mental alertness and healthy relaxation among journalists and other participating teams.
# A new hospitality facility, Exclusive Gold Coast Hotel and Suites, has been opened in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area Anambra State, with it’s Chief Executive Officer, Chief Emeka Wilson-Chidebe saying the investment is aimed at creating employment and encouraging further development in the community.
Chief Wilson-Chidebe, who stated this during the opening of the facility explained that the investment was part of efforts to respond to the call on Oba indigenes to bring their investments home and contribute to the growth of the community.
He said the decision to establish the hotel in Oba was informed by limited number of hotels in Oba and in line with the vision of the traditional institution in Oba, for indigenes to invest in their homeland.
The CEO urged other Oba indigenes, including prominent business people, to heed the call and establish businesses in the community, stressing that Oba has grown beyond its former status and has the capacity to attract major investments.
Representing, Anambra State Governor at the event, the Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Chief Udoji Amaedu said the state remains safe and secure for investors.
The Commissioner said the state government would continue to support private-sector investments capable of creating jobs, promoting tourism and contributing to economic development.
# The Permanent Secretary of the Anambra State Ministry of Health, Dr. Obiageli Uchebo, has commended the dedication and professionalism of staff at Solution Specialist Hospital, Fegge, Onitsha, following a facility inspection visit to the state owned health institution.
The inspection was carried out to assess staff attendance, service delivery, and the overall condition of the hospital as part of the Ministry’s quickly routine monitoring of health facilities across the state.
Speaking after the inspection, Dr. Uchebo said she was impressed with the level of commitment displayed by the hospital staff, noting that about 95 percent of the workforce was present and actively carrying out their duties. She explained that only two members of staff were absent, one on official assignment and the other due to illness.
During the visit, the Permanent Secretary inspected various departments of the hospital, including the Pharmacy, Dietitian Unit, Laboratory, X ray and Scan Unit, Recovery Unit, Medical Ward, Female Ward, Female Surgical Ward, Male Surgical Ward, and the office of the Head of Nursing Services.
# The Supervisor for Education in Ogbaru Local Government Area, Hon. Udoka Chukwura, has been presented with an Award of Honour by the History and International Studies Students Association (HISSA) of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam Campus, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to education and community development.
The award was presented with members of the association commending Hon. Chukwura for his unwavering commitment to educational advancement, youth empowerment, and community service. They described his impact as exemplary and deserving of recognition by the academic community.
In his acceptance speech, Hon. Chukwura expressed heartfelt appreciation to the leadership and members of HISSA, as well as the Department of History and International Studies, for finding him worthy of the prestigious honour. He noted that the recognition would further inspire him to remain committed to supporting educational initiatives, promoting academic excellence, and championing programmes that positively impact students while advancing sustainable community development.
Hon. Chukwura dedicated the award to the people of Ndi Okwaeze Odekpe, acknowledging their unwavering support, encouragement, unity, and shared commitment to progress and development.
# The Anambra State Deputy Governor, Dr. OnyekaChukwu Ibezim has described the pace of development and transformation under the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo as extraordinary.
Dr. Ibezim stated this when he received the District Governor of Rotary International District 9142, Rtn. Chibuzor Asogwa and his delegation during a courtesy visit at the Light House, Awka.
Representing Governor Soludo, Ibezim commended Rotary International for its humanitarian services and contributions towards human and community developments.
Speaking, Rtn. Asogwa congratulated Governor Soludo on his re-election, stating that it demonstrated the confidence of the people in the administration’s achievements.
Welcoming the delegation, the Chief of Protocol to the Governor, Prof. Frank Collins Okafor, a rotarian, described Asogwa as a friend of Anambra State and commended his commitment to Rotary service.
# The Women Wing of St. John’s Anglican Church, Nise, has paid a courtesy visit to the Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, pledging their prayers and support for her administration.
The delegation, led by Rt. Hon. Joy Okonkwo, visited the Commissioner in her office and also conveyed their greetings to “Mama Anambra.”
Speaking during the visit, Rt. Hon. Okonkwo commended Commissioner Onyekesi for her efforts in resolving marriage-related disputes across the state, noting that she had demonstrated commitment to restoring peace in families within a short period in office.
She prayed for God to grant the Commissioner continued wisdom and strength in the discharge of her duties, while appealing to her to carry the women along in her programmes and activities.
Responding, Mrs.Onyekesi thanked the delegation for the visit and encouraged them to work together as a team, urging them to bring their wealth of experience to bear in strengthening families and communities.
The Commissioner emphasised the important role of the Church in moulding the character of society, calling on mothers to lead by example and live exemplary lives worthy of emulation.
