National Sports Commission confirmed on Wednesday that it has paid the naira equivalent of $100,000 to each player of the senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, as part of presidential rewards for winning a record fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title.
Officials of the team each received the naira equivalent of $50,000. The funds were credited to the recipients’ accounts on September 9, and all have confirmed receipt, the commission said.
D’Tigress secured the 2025 continental title for a fifth straight time and a seventh overall.
The payments complete the package of rewards promised by President Bola Tinubu, which also included three-bedroom flats in Abuja and national honours of the Order of the Niger.
“With the payment, the entire presidential rewards promised to each member of the team by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR comprising a 3-Bedroom flat in Abuja, national honours of OON and Naira equivalent of $USD 100,000 to players and $USD 50,000 to officials have been fully redeemed and completed,” the National Sports Commission said in a statement signed by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Kehinde Ajayi.
Players and officials received the title documents for their apartments and certificates of national honours in February 2026 during the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in Lyon, France. The documents were signed by Tinubu.
The cash component followed the team’s participation in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.
The Super Falcons, Nigeria’s senior women’s football team, have also received title documents for three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and national honour certificates. They were handed the documents during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in July and August 2026. The cash rewards of the same amounts are expected before their next official engagements.
The commission described the rewards as part of the federal government’s focus on athletes’ welfare under Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
