# No fewer than ten accident victims have been rescued from a fatal accident scene at the weekend in Awka, the capital of Anambra State.

The victims were rescued through the timely intervention of Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, who not only deployed ambulances but also visited the scene. He was later joined by the Anambra State Federal Road Safety Commission’s Sector Commander, Bridget Asekhauno.

The accident, which occurred around the popular Woman Lecturer in the Okpuno area of the State capital at about 11 pm, involved a trailer and an inter-state public transportation bus. According to an eyewitness, the trailer lost control and rammed into the moving vehicle, injuring ten passengers, while two others died instantly.

Upon receiving the information, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Obidike, immediately dispatched ambulances to the scene to evacuate victims to the hospital. At the time this reporter reached the Commissioner late last night, the Commissioner stated that he had just been informed and had dispatched ambulances to the scene to transport the injured passengers to the hospital for treatment.

 

# The leadership of Agunechemba has announced the immediate disbandment of the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG), directing all vigilante formations operating under the repealed law to cease activities across the state.

The directive was issued in Awka, during the weekend, by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, during a strategic meeting with private security stakeholders.

Emeakayi declared that the law establishing AVG has been repealed, rendering its operations illegal.

He warned, stating that any individual or group found operating under the defunct structure, would be arrested and prosecuted, explaining that the engagement was convened to strengthen internal security collaboration and streamline private security operations within the framework of the Anambra Homeland Security structure.

He disclosed that local government chairmen would soon receive official communication barring them from recognising or working with any vigilante group operating as AVG, emphasizing that Agunechemba structures have now been established in all 21 local government areas, making the continued use of the AVG name unlawful.

 

# The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra Command has extended love to victims of traffic crashes and other patients in various hospitals in the state.

The gesture, mostly cash donations, was extended to patients in Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku and Regina Ceili hospital in collaboration with Road Safety Officer’s Wives Association (ROSOWA) and a philanthropist, Abraham Oti.

Speaking to newsmen shortly after the visits, Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno said the benevolence was in the spirit of the Valentine season.

Asekhauno said in the spirit of love, the FRSC in partnership with ROSOWA and High Chief Abraham Oti, extended love to victims of road traffic crashes, nursing mothers and other patients in the hospitals.

 

# Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu has urged operators to avoid engaging persons with questionable backgrounds and to prioritise the welfare of their staff.

Represented by Deputy Superintendent of Police, Felix Emmanuel of the CP Monitoring Team, during announcement of the immediate disbandment of the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG), at the weekend in Awka, the Police boss warned against arming poorly paid personnel, noting that inadequate welfare could lead to weapon misuse.

“All armed operatives, must be duly registered with both Agunechemba and the Police, while Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) must be kept informed of their activities for effective supervision and accountability. he insisted.

# The Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA) warmly received members of the Island All Stars, Lagos, who paid a courtesy call on the Chairman of the Association, Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, during their August visit to Anambra State.

The delegation, comprising distinguished veteran footballers, was in the State on their way to Akweze, Anambra State, to commiserate with one of their members over the demise of a loved one.

As a mark of respect and solidarity, the team deemed it appropriate to first visit the Chairman of ANSFA, who is also a proud member of Island All Stars Lagos.

Receiving the entourage at the FA Secretariat, Chief Iloenyosi, on behalf of the Anambra State Football Association, expressed deep appreciation for the visit and commended the unity and strong bond that exist among retired footballers across the country. He emphasized the importance of sustaining camaraderie within the football family, particularly during moments of grief and solidarity.

 

# Stakeholders of Njikoka LGA has elected a new mayor following a keenly contested election that drew community leaders, party representatives, and observers from across the area.

The Returning Officer, Chinwe Okoli, officially declared Ikechukwu Okakpu as the winner of the election after the final collation of votes.

According to the official results, Ikechukwu Okakpu, secured the majority of valid votes cast, emerging victorious in the exercise.

In her declaration, Okoli commended stakeholders for conducting themselves peacefully and urged all parties to work together in the interest of Njikoka’s development. She emphasized that the credibility of the process reflected the commitment of the stakeholders to transparency and unity.

The newly elected mayor, Hon. Ikechukwu Okakpu, in his acceptance remarks, expressed gratitude to stakeholders for the confidence reposed in him.

Okakpu pledged to prioritize grassroots development, infrastructural improvement, youth empowerment, and inclusive governance throughout his tenure.

In his remark, the incumbent Mayor, Barr. Chinedu Ononiba thanked Governor Chukwuma Soludo, for his support. He also appreciated The Chief of Staff, Hon. Chinedu Nkwoye (Glamour) for his service and dedication to the progress of Njikoka. He urged party faithful to support Hon. Ikechukwu Okakpu the incoming mayor.

 

# Following the reports of the attempted assassination on his life on the 10th of January 2026, and alleged illegal removal of his elected executive on 30th December 2025 by those he described as disgruntled elements and sore losers, the President of Umueri Welfare Association, Ogbunike, in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nze Levi Elobisi, has opened up on his ordeal in the hands of those that allegedly came to assassinate him along St. Monica’s Ogbunike.

Speaking on the major reasons why they were after his life, Nze Elobisi stated that the community came together to elect him and other executive members on the 18th July 2024, after he embarked on vigorous campaigns to all the kindreds that make up Umunri Village Ogbunike and emerged as the winner of the election.

He stated that the villagers grew increasingly tired of the immediate past executive, who, they said, spent over 17 years in power without anything to show for it and that those who had been benefitting illegally from the sale of Umueri lands wanted to cover all tracks.

 

# The tenure of the newly elected Grand Officers and Grand President, Awka Commandery, led by Brigadier General (Prof) AU Nonyelu and Noble Lady Oby Nwankwo, took off on a spiritual note with a special thanksgiving Mass at St Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral, Awka.

The Holy mass was presided over by the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, represented by the Knights’ Spiritual Director, Very Rev Fr Evaristus Iheanacho.

In his homily, he exhorted the knights of the Church and the entire faithful to be the salt of the world and the light of the nation, saying they were the only two ways to be Disciples of Christ on earth.
