# Anambra Commissioner for Local Government, Community Affairs and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr. Tonycollins Nwabunwanne has congratulated Hon.
Simon-Ikechukwu Orakwe and his executives on their victory at the January 31 President General election of Amanuke
Town Union.
Nwabunwanne also commended ndi Amanuke Community in Awka North Local Government Area, for coming out em mass, describing the election as free and fair.
Orakwe contested against Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council.
Nwabunwanne said the tenure of the executive team was three years and would run from Jan. 31, 2026 Jan. 31, 2029.
# The Green Environment and Climate Change Initiative (GRENCHI) is conducting a three-day E-STEM training programme for secondary school students in environmental conservation skills to build their capacity to contribute to climate action and sustainability.
The students were trained in field-based data collection and analysis, biodiversity monitoring and mapping, water conservation in agriculture, air and water quality monitoring, and renewable energy systems, with emphasis on solar technology.
The training funded by North American Association for Environmental Education, (NAAEE) as well as Pratt & Whitney, enjoys the support of other local partners, including Eastern, and Green Technologies, the Departments of Crop Science and Horticulture, and Forestry and Wildlife at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK).
Others are: the Sahelian Institute of Bamboo Research and Entrepreneurship Development (SIBRED) and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).
In his speech, GRENCHI’s Programme Lead, Dr. Oluropo Apalowo, said the organization through the intervention seeks to close the gap between theory and practice in environmental education.
The Programme Lead noted that many environmental interventions focus largely on classroom instruction, which he identified as a gap in knowledge acquisition.
# Ndi Achalla, a Community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State have protested insecurity in their community farmlands.
During the protest, they called on the state government to withdraw the certificate of recognition given to their Traditional Ruler, Igwe Ositadimma Nwokedi, over alleged misappropriation of security funds, involvement in encouraging touting, drug abuse and cultism among youths, as well as the alleged use of such elements to oppress members of the community, among other claims.
Speaking at the Government House, Awka, the Vice President General of Achalla, Mr. Uchenna Nnakwue, who led the protesters, expressed their displeasure over the situation’.
Addressing the protesters, the Permanent Secretary, Government House, Awka, Dr. Nwabufo Nwankwo, who noted that in a democracy, people are free to express grievances in line with extant laws, assured them that their complaints would be taken to the appropriate authorities for investigation and necessary action.
When contacted, Igwe Nwokedi described the protesters’ allegations against him as spurious, and outlined the efforts he has continued to make to ensure security in Achalla and sustain the fight against drug abuse and cultism among youths in the community, regretting that he has been subjected to cyberbullying.
# A single mother, Ms. Ndidi Enekwechi, has raised an alarm over what she described as her forceful and unlawful eviction from her late father’s house by her elder brother, an action that has allegedly left her homeless and vulnerable in Nise community, Awka South LGA of Anambra State.
The incident reportedly occurred at the family’s two-storey residence located at No. 25 Enekwechi Avenue, Ngodo-Nise.
Ndidi said she had been living in a three-bedroom apartment within the house, which she claimed was allocated to her by their late father before his death.
She accused her elder brother, Mr. Damian Okwudili Enekwechi, popularly known as Ejiamatu, of unlawfully invading the family house with hired workers on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, and ordering her to vacate the apartment without any prior notice or legal process.
# Onitsha South Stakeholders Forum has presented a cheque for six million naira to the Mayor of the Council, Honourable Emeka Orji, for the purchase of Nomination and Expression of Interest forms for the 2026 Anambra State Local Government elections.
Presenting the cheque, the Chairman of the Forum, Chief Livinus Ezenkwu, said the gesture followed their earlier endorsement of the Mayor for a second tenure because of his outstanding and dynamic administration, which has transformed the entire area and uplifted the lives of the people, including entrenching an efficient and effective sanitation culture.
Also speaking, a member of the forum and former Anambra State Chairman of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Emeka Udodeme, said the re-election of Honourable Orji would enable him to consolidate on his remarkable and multidimensional achievements that will reposition the area for sustainable development.
Udodeme recalled that within a short time in office he recovered many stolen council lands and properties, which provided the needed space for development projects, including the construction of the first fire service station in the area, while his interventions on council roads have expanded and increased the volume of socio-economic activities.

The local government boss disclosed that, in addition to building a fire service station, he has acquired a fire truck, recovered over fourteen plots of land from land grabbers.
Orji noted that works have commenced work on the Creek Road Bypass connecting Bida Road and Modebe Avenue with the aim of linking the entire area, assuring that if re-elected he will sustain mass infrastructural development, effective sanitation and beautification programmes, and plans to plant two thousand trees in the first quarter.
# The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, led by the Pro-Chancellor/Chairman Barr. Olugbenga Kukoyi, embarked on a tour of the College of Health Sciences, Nnewi (Okofia and Akamili) and Neni.
The team, including the Vice Chancellor, Prof Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, inspected the extensive construction and facilities at these sites.
# All transporters in Anambra State have passed a resolution assuring the state government that they will work on Mondays to convey passengers to their destinations.
The transporters, who gave the assurance through their leaders, Chief Anthony Okwugo and Mr. Vincent Ukwuoma, during a meeting with the Ministry of Transport held in Awka, regretted that Anambra State had lost huge revenue that should have been used by Governor Chukwuma Soludo to construct more roads due to the Monday sit-at-home.
They maintained that every transport department must be open for transport activities on Mondays, commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for ending the Monday sit-at-home in Anambra that had lingered for years, and urged him to beef up security across the state on Mondays so that residents will feel safe to go about their legitimate businesses, even as they appealed to the state government to ensure that independent petroleum marketers operate on Mondays to enable transporters function seamlessly.
Addressing the transporters, the Commissioner for Transport in Anambra State, Mrs. Patricia Igwebuike, explained that the essence of the meeting was to sensitize them on the need to be available on Mondays so they could provide transport services to the growing number of people on the roads now that markets, schools, and banks in the state have resumed operations on Mondays.
# The dates for APGA Local Government Stakeholders’ meetings have been adjusted to 9th or 10th February 2026.
