# The Anambra State House of Assembly, during its plenary session, adopted the Report of the House Committee on Public Petitions regarding a high-stakes land dispute in Onitsha.
The plenary, presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, approved recommendations to safeguard public utility plots from alleged illegal encroachment.
The report, presented by the Committee Chairman, Hon. Obi Nweke, followed a critical petition titled: “Complaint against the use of force and armed thugs to enter and attempt to illegally acquire plots Nos P/4 and P/2 Akpaka Forest GRA 2 Onitsha by Barr. Harold Ekwerekwu together with his Okposieme Family and one Col. Emordi (Rtd).”
The case was brought forward by the Onitsha G.R.A Phase II (Akpaka) Resident Landlords Association (the Petitioners) against Barr. Harold Ekwerekwu and Col. Emordi Rtd. (the Respondents).
# The Supreme Kegite Club, Anambra Hemisphere, has conferred its highest honorary distinction on the Vice-Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Professor Kate Azuka Omenugha, decorating her as the Club’s Grand Matron.
The honour was bestowed during a courtesy visit by a delegation led by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Innocent Ngangah, the Kegite Staff Adviser, Prof. Chinedu Igboeli, and the Chairman of the Supreme Kegite Club, Anambra Hemisphere, Chief Ifeanyi Onyebuchi.
The Club noted that the prestigious title is reserved for distinguished personalities, including Presidents and State Governors.
The delegation commended Prof. Omenugha for what it described as her visionary leadership and commitment to repositioning the university through purposeful reforms and transformational initiatives.
Speaking on behalf of the fraternity, Chief Onyebuchi praised the Vice-Chancellor’s efforts to tackle corruption and institutional irregularities. He also highlighted her firm stance against sexual harassment, the introduction of COOU Bread and COOU Table Water as entrepreneurial products, and the digitisation of university operations, particularly during the recent Students’ Union Government election.
Prof. Igboeli described the Kegite Club as a peaceful, culturally oriented and law-abiding fraternity with no links to occultism or any clandestine activities. He assured the Vice-Chancellor of the Club’s commitment to supporting the university’s 3Vs agenda—Values, Viability and Visibility—as well as its environmental sanitation campaign, “Pick It.” He added that the fraternity would continue promoting peace, unity and discipline within the institution.
Responding, Prof. Omenugha said her admiration for the Kegite Club dates back to her undergraduate years, even though she was never an official member. She noted that her long-standing interest in the fraternity had made her familiar with its traditions and unique culture.
The Vice-Chancellor, however, expressed concern over persistent misconceptions about the Kegite Club, saying it has often been unfairly labelled in ways that do not reflect its philosophy and values.
She urged the Club’s leadership to protect its reputation by preventing individuals of questionable character from infiltrating its ranks. She also encouraged members to prioritise mentoring younger initiates, stressing the importance of instilling the values, discipline and identity for which the Kegite Club is known.
# A fresh crisis has engulfed the Anambra State Local Government Service Commission (LGSC), following the controversial suspension of the Commission’s Secretary, Anatogu F.N. by members of a board that was reportedly dissolved by the state government earlier this year.
The development has sparked allegations of abuse of power, administrative interference and disregard for due process, exposing deep divisions within the commission.
Sharing some of his experiences with upcoming artistes as a music producer, Mr. Ifediorah advised both emerging and established musicians whose songs are yet to gain widespread recognition to remain patient and persistent, noting that achieving success often requires time, consistency, and hard work.
He encouraged upcoming musicians to take advantage of digital platforms to promote their works, describing technology as a major advantage for today’s artistes over their counterparts in the past, adding that, according to him, advances in technology have significantly improved music production and created more opportunities for people to excel as musicians and producers.
# Officials of Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA) took their free HIV screening to Oko and Nanka communities respectively, after they had done same at Ajalli, the headquarters of Orumba North Local Goverment Area.
The agency in its quest to ensure that every resident of the state know his or her HIV status and also end the spread of new infections, took time to lecture every one who participated in the screening, even as they equally examined people’s blood pressure and sugar level, as well as hepatitis.
They also gave health talks on how to live healthy lives in both communities, saying that the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo is determined to ensure that every resident of the State is living healthy, which is why he prioritized the health needs of ndi Anambra by investing heavily in the health sector, appealing to people to always check and know their HIV status for their own good.
Mrs Ngozi Ezeani who is a nurse after undergone the screening, commended the ANSACA team for doing a fantastic job, calling on the residents to always come out and check their health status at all times to avoid slump and die, adding that HIV could be managed and the carriers live better lives.
Also speaking, Mr. Bishop Odenga, commended the Soludo administration for being proactive and responsive on the issues of healthcare delivery, noting that he is happy to be diagnosed without any disease, pleading with the youths of the State to always do so.
ANSACA officials also shared both male and female condoms, and lubricants during the exercise, even as they taught those who were diagnosed on how to effectively wear condom for maximum performance.
# An Ogbunike-born philanthropist based in Morton Grove, United States of America, Sir Okwy Okeke, has commenced the construction of the permanent site for his free school for Ndị Ogbunike as part of his efforts to make basic education accessible to both the rich and the poor in the community.
The tuition-free school, “Heirs School of Excellence”, located at Ukalor, Ogbunike, in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, was established by Sir Okwy over seven years ago to provide free basic education from crèche to primary school level for both indigenes and non-indigenes resident in the community.
Conducting the management team of the Anambra Broadcasting Service, led by the Acting Managing Director of the station, Barrister Juliet Mbaonu-Ike, round the new school site, Sir Okwy said the project was part of his commitment to ensuring that no child in Ogbunike is denied access to education, and pledged to sustain his campaign against illiteracy, which he described as a major obstacle to meaningful development.
The Head Mistress of Heirs School of Excellence, Ukalor, Ogbunike, Mrs Blessing Nwogbu, said the school had operated from the village hall since its establishment, which could no longer accommodate the growing number of pupils seeking admission, and expressed delight that the permanent site on completion would provide a more conducive learning environment for them.
She noted that despite offering free education for the children, Sir Okwy has consistently paid staff salaries as and when due, and prayed God to continue to bless and reward him for his generosity.
In separate interviews, the Chairman of Ukalor Welfare Union, Engineer Henry Modeme, and the Youth Leader of the village, who is also the engineer handling the project, Mr Chukwujioke Ndibe, commended Sir Okwy for his numerous contributions to the development of Ogbunike, and observed that the free school has relieved many parents of the financial burden of basic education, while the construction of the permanent site has also created employment opportunities for youths in the community, calling on other well-meaning individuals to emulate his philanthropic gesture in the interest of societal development.
# Members of the Soludo Women’s Movement have paid a congratulatory visit to the Secretary to the Anambra State Government (SSG), Mrs. Chiamaka Nnake, following her appointment to the prestigious position by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
During the visit to the SSG’s office, the women expressed their joy and appreciation to Governor Soludo for appointing a woman to the position of Secretary to the State Government. They also noted that Mrs. Nnake is the youngest person to occupy the office in the history of Anambra State, describing her appointment as a testament to the Governor’s commitment to merit, inclusiveness, and youth empowerment.
Speaking on behalf of the group, the National Secretary Soludo Women’s Movement International, Dr. Eucharia Oshia, congratulated Mrs. Nnake on her well-deserved appointment and commended her dedication, hard work, and outstanding contributions to public service.
As a mark of recognition for her exemplary leadership and commitment to excellence, the group presented Mrs. Nnake with an Award of Excellence. They stated that the award was in appreciation of her remarkable achievements and the inspiration she continues to provide to women and young people across the state.
The women further pledged their continued support for the administration of Governor Soludo and reaffirmed their commitment to promoting the administration’s vision for a prosperous and progressive Anambra State.
# Ave Maria Prayer Ministry, Ifite Awka, Anambra State have dedicate its Ministry Empowerment Project Centres and unveiled a shuttle bus for its Women’s Wing as part of activities marking its 2026 Praise Day celebration.
The event, which aligns with Governor Charles Soludo’s human capital development agenda, took place at the ministry’s prayer arena in Ifite Awka.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Spiritual Director of the ministry, Dr. Bro. Livinus Okeke, explained that the empowerment centres, anchored on an agro-based mini industry, were established to alleviate hardship, create employment opportunities, generate funds for ministry projects, empower vulnerable individuals, and promote self-reliance among members.
According to him, the agro-based mini industry is involved in the processing of garri and cassava flakes, palm oil processing and packaging, palm kernel oil extraction, grinding and processing of cereals, as well as the production of feed for poultry, fish, and pig farming.
The controversy began on June 17, 2026, when three former members of the dissolved LGSC board — Uche Okafor (Member II), Prof. Ngozi Ewuim (Member III) and Hon. Anthonia Tabansi Okoye (Member IV) — reportedly forwarded a memorandum to the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Barrister Vin Ezeaka, seeking approval for the immediate suspension of the commission’s secretary over allegations of forgery and impersonation.
The allegations stem from circumstances surrounding the resignation of Hon. Azubuike Okoye, a former Member I of the Commission.
According to documents, the commissioner, who was the immediate past chairman of the LGSC board, subsequently approved the recommendation for the secretary’s suspension.
# The Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, has called on the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN), Anambra State Chapter, to partner with the state government in tackling criminality, rent exploitation, and environmental abuse in the housing sector.
Mefor made the call when the executive members of REDAN, led by the state chairman, Dr. Sunny Nwachukwu, paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Awka.
He expressed concern over what he described as exploitative practices by some estate agents, particularly the collection of excessive commissions from both landlords and tenants.
According to him, the state government is considering legislation to regulate agents’ commissions and curb arbitrary rent increases.
In their separate speeches, REDAN State Chairman, Dr. Sunny Nwachukwu, and the association’s Emeritus Chairman, Sir Law Nkwonta, said the body had operated in Anambra for three years and remained committed to ethical real estate development.
They appealed to the state government to formally recognise and integrate REDAN into its housing regulatory framework, noting that several states require developers to obtain REDAN membership certificates before registering or developing land.
# The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has congratulated Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi on his re-election as Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association (AnSFA) for a second term.
Gusau conveyed his congratulatory message to Iloenyosi via telephone on Tuesday, praising his unopposed return and the overwhelming confidence reposed in him by members of the Anambra football family.
The NFF President also assured the AnSFA Chairman of the federation’s continued partnership in promoting grassroots football development, youth football, coach education, and sports infrastructure in Anambra State.
Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, popularly known as “General,” was returned unopposed during the Anambra State Football Association Elective Congress held on Tuesday at the East End Hotel, Awka.
Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Barr. Darlington Okeke, declared Iloenyosi elected after he secured all 23 votes cast by delegates.
In his acceptance speech, Iloenyosi expressed gratitude to members of the association for renewing their confidence in his leadership. He pledged to work closely with the Anambra State Government and sports journalists to ensure football maintains its status as the leading sport in the state.
# Musicians have been advised to put more effort into their craft, as music remains an indispensable part of human life and plays a vital role in virtually every aspect of society.
A popular music producer and musician in Anambra State, Mr. Alex Ifediorah, gave the advice while reacting to this year’s World Music Day, which was observed globally yesterday.
Mr. Ifediorah described music as a serious profession because of its far-reaching impact on society and urged musicians to always give their best in every song they produce, encouraging them to pay greater attention to song composition, arrangement, rehearsal, and regular practice before going into the studio, so as to produce quality songs capable of making a lasting impact.
