# The Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Anambra State, Dr Law Mefor, has warned students against total reliance on artificial intelligence, saying AI should aid learning and not replace it.
Dr Mefor gave the warning while delivering a keynote address at the Synergy Hub Launch and TechMedia Exco 1.0, organised by the Students Union Government (SUG) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka.
He expressed concern that many students now depend entirely on AI tools to do their academic work. “AI should aid your research, not become a substitute for knowledge. Some students now copy answers from ChatGPT and other AI techs and submit them without any effort to make them their own. You may ‘graduate without graduating’, he cautioned.
The commissioner said while technology is important, students must develop critical thinking and real knowledge to remain relevant in the future and urged UNIZIK students to take advantage of the state government’s free digital skills programme delivered by the Solution Innovation District (SID).
He noted that SID training can be accessed on smartphones without leaving campus. “With a smartphone, you can learn digital skills from your room. I will send the link to your leadership to share,” he said.
He advised students to prioritise skills over certificates, emphasising that their future careers depend on their abilities and academic excellence.
The Commissioner also said the Ministry of Information and Value Reformation would work with SUGs to create a plan for enforcement-driven value reformation in Anambra so that as infrastructure grows, citizens’ character also grows, as the Solution Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, envisions.
Earlier, the SUG PRO, Giant Comrade Ifeanyi James Nduba, said the Synergy Hub is a tech and media mentorship platform built on the principle of “iron sharpeneth iron”, where professionals are paired with beginners for mentorship.
According to him, the aim is to prepare students for job opportunities within and outside school ahead of their graduation.
# The wife of the governor of Anambra State, Dr. (Mrs) Nonye Soludo, has urged women across the state to use this year’s Annual August Meetings as a platform to confront the disturbing rise in cases of violent abuse, molestation, neglect and inhumane treatment of domestic workers, insisting that the silence surrounding such acts must end.
In her message to mark the commencement of the 2026 August Meeting, Dr. Soludo urged women to deliberately shift part of their discussions from the traditional focus on community development projects and social activities to finding practical and lasting solutions to what she described as an emerging social and moral crisis slowly eating into the fabrics societal unity and child development.
She observed that recent reports of lethal physical assault, starvation, torture and emotional abuse and other degrading treatment meted out to housemaids, many of them minors, should trouble every conscientious mother.
According to the governor’s wife, while the August Meeting has, over the years, remained a powerful platform for advancing community development, promoting peace, strengthening families and preserving cherished religious and cultural values, it must also evolve to respond to pressing social realities, especially those within the domain of family and child raising.
She noted that no society can truly claim to uphold the sanctity of motherhood while turning a blind eye to the suffering of vulnerable children entrusted to families for guidance, protection, and care.
# The President-General of Nzuko Ora Nnewi, Hon. Prince Jude Osumuoh, has dismissed claims that the 1997 power-sharing agreement among Nnewi’s four quarters provides for a two-year tenure for the office of the Local Government Chairman, describing such assertions as politically motivated and intended to attract sympathy.
Speaking during an interview at the Nzuko Ora Nnewi office on Friday, amid renewed controversy over the tenure of the Mayor of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Osumuoh urged the people of Nnewi to ignore what he described as attempts by “fifth columnists” to create unnecessary tension.
Reacting to reports on social media alleging that Nnewichi Quarter had withdrawn from Nzuko Ora Nnewi and would boycott the forthcoming Afia Olu Nnewi festival, the President-General maintained that the rotational arrangement for the mayorship clearly provides for a four-year tenure, insisting that no community would be denied its rightful turn.
Osumuoh called on the Anambra State Government, security agencies, the media, and the general public to disregard the rumours, stressing that Nnewi remains peaceful and stable.
He noted that the tenure issue had long been settled, including through the courts, adding that those reviving the matter were merely seeking to inflame passions for political reasons.
According to him, there is no precedent in Nnewi for a two-year mayoral tenure, insisting that the document being circulated online as the 1997 agreement is merely an unsigned draft and not the authentic, final agreement.
The President-General also dismissed claims by an individual to the position of Traditional Prime Minister of Nnewi, stating that no group could prevent the traditional ruler of Nnewi, Igwe Kenneth Orizu III, from attending the annual Afia Olu festival.
He further absolved the incumbent Mayor of Nnewi North, Hon. Echezona Anazodo, of any involvement in the controversy, explaining that Anazodo’s community, Umudim, requested that he complete what they consider its rightful four-year tenure.
According to Osumuoh, Igwe Kenneth Orizu III supports the government’s position on Anazodo’s candidacy.
# The Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, has restated her ministry’s readiness to work with any group genuinely committed to ending Gender-Based Violence, (GBV) in the state.
Onyekesi spoke while receiving members of the Anambra State Multi-Stakeholders Committee on Gender-Based Violence Prevention, MAP-GBV, who visited her office at the Professor Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Awka.
Madam Commissioner warned that GBV would not be tolerated, cautioning offenders to desist or leave the state, as her administration remains determined to track down perpetrators and see them prosecuted.
In his speech, the Chairman of MAP-GBV Prevention and Traditional Ruler of Olumbanasaa, Igwe Pius Omachaonu, briefed the Commissioner on the committee’s operations and revealed that its major sponsor, ActionAid Nigeria, would be exiting the programme by the end of the year.
The Monarch appealed to the ministry, being the domiciled host of the initiative, to assume full ownership so as to sustain its continuity.
Igwe Omachaonu also spoke on upcoming sensitisation activities and flagged the lack of office space as a major challenge hampering the committee’s coordination, appealing for greater support from the ministry.
# The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), RS 5.3 Anambra Sector Command, has conducted a Zonal Special Intervention Patrol tagged “Fushin Kada” Mobile Court Exercise along the Awka–Onitsha Expressway on Wednesday, 22nd July, 2026, in compliance with the directives of the Road Safety National Headquarters (RSHQ).
The Mobile Court exercise was presided over by Her Worship Maria Anyabolu.
A total of 22 offenders were arrested for various traffic offences, involving 61 offences.
Of the 22 offenders prosecuted, 21 were convicted, while 1 offender was discharged by the court.
The offences recorded during the exercise included: Seatbelt Use Violation,
Overloading, Drivers Licence Violation,
Failure to install speed Limiting Device,
Assaulting Marshal on Duty, Dangerous Driving, Number Plate Violation, Attempting to Corrupt Marshal on duty and other various traffic offences.
The Sector Commander, Corps Commander, Bridget Asekhauno reiterated that the exercise is aimed at ensuring compliance with traffic laws, promoting responsible road use, and reducing road traffic crashes on major highways within Anambra State.
# The newly elected Executive Members of the Anambra State Town Union Council (ASTUC) Women Wing have been officially inaugurated at the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare.
Speaking during the inauguration, the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, congratulated the executives on their election and urged them to carry out their responsibilities with the fear of God, unity, transparency, diligence, and commitment.
Mrs. Onyekesi emphasized that teamwork and selfless service would enable the association to achieve meaningful results and make a positive impact on women across Anambra State.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Local Government Affairs, Barr. Vincent Ezeaka, congratulated the newly inaugurated executives and encouraged them to remain focused, united, and committed to advancing the objectives of the ASTUC Women Wing while supporting the development agenda of the state.

# The Enugwu-Agidi Brotherly Union (EBU Nigeria), Abuja Main Branch, has thrown its weight behind the Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, congratulating him on his appointment and expressing confidence in his capacity to drive the state’s environmental transformation.

# The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Hon. Chukwukadibia Okoye has inaugurated the 2027 State Budget Committee at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka.
Hon. Okoye charged the committee to keep the process transparent and People-Driven.
Calling the budget “the heartbeat of governance,” he said it must deliver real impact to ndi Anambra and drive Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s transformative agenda.

# The Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association, Nnewi North Zone, will hold its annual Livestock Workshop at the Nnewi North Council Secretariat on Tuesday, 29 July 2026.
The delegation, led by the Supervisor for Agriculture, Nnewi North, Hon. Damian Okala, announced this during a courtesy visit to the President General of Nzukọ Ọra Nnewi Town Union, Hon. Prince Jude Osumuoh.
Hon. Okala said the visit was to formally notify the President General of the workshop, themed: “Ensuring and Sustaining the Availability of Animal Protein in the Diet of Our Local Communities. He added that the programme will focus on strategies to improve livestock production and guarantee access to affordable animal protein.
In his response, Hon. Osumuoh thanked the delegation and pledged his support for the workshop. He also expressed readiness to collaborate with the association to achieve its objectives.
# Residents of Nkpor in Idemili North Local Government Area have expressed appreciation to Governor Chukwuma Soludo following the significant improvement in electricity supply across the community in recent weeks.
About two months ago, many residents lamented prolonged power outages, saying the situation disrupted businesses, affected livelihoods, and reduced their quality of life. They appealed to the state government for intervention.
Following the improvement in electricity supply, residents say economic activities have picked up, while households now enjoy greater convenience and improved living conditions compared to the period of persistent blackout.
Speaking on the development, Mr. Ugochukwu Eneh described the improved electricity supply as a welcome relief, noting that it has restored normalcy to his daily activities and business.
According to him, he can now preserve drinks, operate electrical appliances efficiently, and no longer depends on candles for lighting, adding that the high cost of fuel made alternative power sources unaffordable.
