# The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Anambra State Chapter, led by its President, Dr. Mrs. Ugochi Chilaka, paid a courtesy visit to the Mayor of Nnewi North LGA, Hon. Echezona Anazodo, at the Council Secretariat.
Dr. Chilaka said the visit was to strengthen collaboration with the Council on health interventions, especially maternal and child health, school health programmes, and free medical outreaches in Nnewi North.
Speaking, Anazodo commended MWAN for its selfless service to humanity. He pledged the Council’s full support for upcoming health campaigns targeting women, children, and the elderly in rural communities.
# Justice Peter Obiorah of the Court of Appeal has described judges as “ministers in the temple of justice,” urging them to uphold the highest standards of integrity, morality and fairness in the discharge of their duties.
Justice Obiorah made the remark during a workshop on plea bargaining held at Finotel Classique Hotel, Awka, organized for judges and sponsored by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Programme, focused on strengthening the administration of criminal justice in Anambra State.
Speaking as the facilitator, Justice Obiorah stressed that judges must not only interpret the law but also embody the moral principles that underpin justice.
According to him, the growing emphasis on plea bargaining requires judges to have a thorough understanding of its provisions under the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) and their role in ensuring its effective implementation.
# The Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG Kenechukwu Onwuemelie have paid a courtesy visit to the traditional ruler of Awka, Obi Gibson Nwosu at his Palace in Awka, alongside senior Police officers of the Anambra State Police Command.
In his welcome remark, Obi Nwosu who spoke through the traditional Prime minister, Chief Okoye appreciated DIG Onwuemelie for being a thorough bred officer and a proud Awka son, finding it necessary to come pay homage to the traditional stool of Awka, noting that with the wealth of experience of the traditional ruler, Awka Community is ever willing to partner with the Police on security, praying for him and wishing him well.
DIG Onwuemelie in his remark, explained that he is on operational visit to police formations across the South East region on the direction of the Inspector General of Police, IG Rilwan Disu and found it necessary to pay homage to the throne of his community; Awka, as he had earlier met senior police officers of the command over security while soliciting for community partnership in dealing with security challenges in the south east.
# The Anambra State House of Assembly has called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to declare an emergency Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Programme for communities severely affected by insecurity across the state.
The lawmakers said the initiative would focus on rebuilding critical infrastructure, restoring educational and healthcare services, revitalizing economic activities, facilitating the return of displaced residents, and accelerating healing and development in the affected areas.
The call followed a motion moved during Tuesday’s plenary by the member representing Ihiala II Constituency, Hon. Golden Iloh.
Leading the debate, Hon. Iloh noted that several communities in Ihiala, Ogbaru, Orumba South, Nnewi South, Awka North, Aguata, Ayamelum, and Orumba North Local Government Areas suffered extensive destruction of public infrastructure, disruption of education and healthcare services, displacement of residents, and economic setbacks as a result of insecurity.
He observed that the proactive security measures and strong political will demonstrated by Governor Soludo’s administration have largely restored peace and normalcy in many of the affected communities.
Presiding over the session, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, commended Hon. Iloh for sponsoring the motion and described the proposal as timely.
# The Anambra State Government has intensified efforts to eliminate maternal deaths through strengthened collaboration with UNICEF and other development partners aimed at improving maternal and child health outcomes across the state.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ engagement on maternal health performance, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that no woman dies from preventable pregnancy-related causes. He noted that the state is considering a comprehensive household mapping initiative to generate accurate population data for improved planning, resource allocation, and healthcare delivery.
The engagement featured three technical presentations on the June 2026 Performance Update.
The first was delivered by Ikeanyionwu Ijeoma, MPCDSR Desk Officer, while the second was presented by Mrs Edith Onwuka, State Immunisation Officer who spoke on strengthening of Immunisation coverage through PHC service champions and Dr Emembolu Chuma, State Epidemiologist, who provided updates on maternal health outcomes and the state’s epidemiological situation.
The UNICEF team at the engagement included Martin Dohlshen, Health Manager, UNICEF, and Dr. Ifeyinwa Anyanyo, Health Specialist, UNICEF, who contributed to discussions on improving maternal and child health systems, data quality, and service delivery.
UNICEF Health Systems Specialist, Dr. Emmanuel Emedo, commended the state’s progress but urged improvements in data systems, describing the “Black Book” as a key challenge. He also emphasized the need for accurate birth registration and stronger disease surveillance.
Despite gains, the report highlighted concerns over neonatal and child mortality, as well as gaps in death reporting systems between DHIS2 and MPCDSR platforms, indicating under-reporting of maternal and neonatal deaths.
# The Youth Wing of the Anambra State Town Unions Council (ASTUC) has honoured eight distinguished individuals as outstanding community role models in Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The recognition ceremony, held at the Ayamelum Local Government Secretariat in Anaku, was aimed at inspiring young people to embrace positive values, leadership, and community service.

# The Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Barrister Amara Muojeke, has called for stronger protection of widows’ rights and increased economic empowerment to enable widows live with dignity, independence, and security.
Speaking in Awka to commemorate the 2026 International Widows’ Day, Muojeke, who also serves as the State Leader of the NBA Women Forum, noted that June 23 is observed globally to highlight the challenges faced by widows and advocate for the protection of their welfare and fundamental rights.
She explained that the 2026 theme, “Justice, Dignity and Economic Empowerment of Widows,” is particularly relevant in Nigeria and Anambra State, where many widows continue to face harmful traditional practices, disinheritance, and unlawful seizure of property.
According to Muojeke, Section 34 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees the dignity of every human person, emphasizing that widows deserve respect, fairness, and protection under the law. She added that economic empowerment is essential, as financially independent widows are better equipped to support their families and resist exploitation.
The FIDA Chairperson further highlighted existing legal protections in Anambra State, including the Malpractices Against Widows and Widowers (Prohibition) Law of 2005 and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law of 2017, which criminalize harmful widowhood practices and prescribe penalties for offenders.
# The Mayor of Nnewi North LGA, Hon. Echezona Anazodo has received the Chairman of Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Dr.Justina Anyadiegwu on a familiarization tour at the Council Secretariat, Nnewi.
Dr. Anyadiegwu said the visit was part of ASUBEB’s statewide tour to assess the state of basic education and strengthen partnership with LGAs under Gov. Charles Soludo’s “Solution” agenda.
Speaking during the visit Hon. Anazodo assured ASUBEB of his administration’s full commitment to supporting the education drive of the Solution Government. He pledged to tackle challenges facing public primary schools in Nnewi North while promising to partner with the agency in ensuring the education system in Nnewi North becomes the best.
# The Anambra State Commissioner for Lands, Prof. Offornze Dike Amucheazi, SAN has reaffirmed the commitment of the Anambra State Government under Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR to transforming Awka Capital Territory into a modern and investment-friendly capital city.
Prof. Amucheazi also stated that efforts are being intensified through numerous reforms such as the launch of Anambra Geographic Information System (ANAMGIS) by the Soludo administration aimed at sustaining the current effective, and efficient land administration system in the State.
The Commissioner made this known when he received on technical assessment visit, in his office, a delegation from a Spanish conglomerate, ACCIONA Consulting, appointed by African Development Bank as AfDB’s sets to commence multi-sectoral infrastructure development interventions in Awka Capital Territory under its Africa Cities Programme.
Prof. Amucheazi noted that the launch of ANAMGIS, a modern Geographic Information System in Nigeria, is in furtherance of Governor Soludo’s audacious drive for a sustainable urban development and regeneration in the State.
He added that the development of the new city of Awka 2.0, a top priority urbanisation drive of Governor Soludo, is part of the administration’s efforts at developing a capital city people can be proud of.
Prof. Amucheazi thanked the group for their commitment to supporting the administration’s urbanisation and regeneration drive in the State.
# ‎The Chairman of Anambra East Local Government Area, Hon. Sir Ifeanyi Chinweze, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to executing quality projects that meet required standards and address the needs of residents.

‎Sir Chinweze gave the assurance on June 22 during an inspection visit to the ongoing Eziovele Umueri Road project, which has reached 98 percent completion.
‎During the inspection, the council chairman assessed the level of work done and commended the contractor for the progress achieved. He, however, noticed that some drainage channels along the road were blocked, warning that the situation could affect the lifespan of the project.

‎He promptly ordered the clearing of the affected drainage channels to ensure free water flow and prevent possible erosion and flooding, particularly during the rainy season.
