# Governor Chukwuma Soludo, has convened an emergency peace and security meeting with stakeholders from Aguleri and Umuoba Anam communities in Anambra East Local Government Area following a recent communal clash that resulted in loss of life and injuries.
The meeting is scheduled to hold on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at the Light House, Awka, as part of efforts to address the underlying issues behind the dispute and achieve a lasting resolution.
Soludo in a press statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Christian Aburime, expressed deep sadness over the casualties recorded during the clash, stressing that violence, bloodletting and destruction of property have no place in a peaceful and prosperous Anambra State.
In the interim, the Governor has directed both communities to immediately cease all hostilities, maintain absolute peace and exercise restraint.
He further directed that all grievances, claims and presentations relating to the dispute should be channelled exclusively through the designated stakeholders of the respective communities at the emergency meeting in Awka.
The Governor also directed security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, to maintain a strong presence in the affected area to enforce law and order, protect lives and property, and prevent further escalation of the crisis.
# There was mild drama at the Anambra State High Court, Awka, on Tuesday, September 5, 2026, when suspected supporters and church members of the General Overseer of Dayspring Assembly, Awada-Obosi, Pastor Harrison Anazodo, allegedly attacked journalists covering his court appearance.
The incident reportedly occurred as supporters attempted to shield the cleric from journalists and cameramen while he was being taken into the courtroom.
Eyewitnesses said the supporters used umbrellas and their hands to block the cameras, while the vehicle conveying Anazodo allegedly pushed against some journalists as it reversed towards the entrance of the court.
Three journalists reportedly had their mobile phones damaged during the altercation.
The supporters also allegedly occupied virtually all available spaces in the courtroom, leaving little or no room for journalists and other observers.
Speaking to journalists after the proceedings, the Anambra State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, condemned the incident.
Barr. Nweke said he had drawn the attention of the court to the development because the court premises and courtroom were hallowed places, while journalists had a responsibility to report proceedings to the public.
The Attorney-General said he condemned the conduct, asked the court to take note of it in the proceedings and indicated that he would escalate the matter to law enforcement authorities.
According to him, counsel to the defendant subsequently apologised to the court, the press and the Attorney-General and agreed to replace the damaged gadgets.
# The Anambra State Police Command has sustained its intelligence-led operations against criminal elements across the state, arresting 13 suspects in separate operations and recovering firearms, ammunition, charms, cult-related insignia, suspected illicit drugs, dangerous weapons and a stolen vehicle.
It was gathered that on September 30, 2026, operatives of the Okpoko Police Division, acting on credible intelligence, raided a suspected criminal hideout around Coca-Cola Market, Okpoko, and arrested 20-year-old Somtochukwu Ezeibe.
Recovered from the suspect were one locally made double-barrel pistol, one live cartridge and charms. A follow-up search at his residence also led to the recovery of a Vikings Confraternity beret and peak cap.
Preliminary investigation reportedly revealed the suspect’s alleged involvement in cult-related activities. According to the police, information provided by Ezeibe assisted investigators in identifying other persons allegedly connected to the group.
Consequently, on October 5, 2026, operatives arrested eight additional suspects identified as Chinonso Njoku, Tochukwu Ogbonna, Chidiebere Anokwuru, Chidera Nwakpa, Nweke Chibuike, Somadina Otubo, Chibueze Ikechukwu and Obum James.
The suspects have since been transferred to the Anti-Cult Unit for further investigation and possible prosecution.
# Anambra State has once again made a strong statement on the national education stage, winning nine of the 18 awards at the 2026 President’s Teachers’ and Schools’ Excellence Awards.
The impressive feat, which saw the state secure eight awards outright in their respective categories and emerge first runner-up in another, further underscores the growing excellence of Anambra’s education sector.
The awards cut across teachers, school administrators and schools, highlighting the breadth of recognition earned by the state at the national level.
Anambra emerged overall best in the following categories: Public Primary School Administrator, Public Junior Secondary School Administrator, Private Junior Secondary School Teacher, Public Primary School Teacher, Private Junior Secondary School, Private Senior Secondary School, Private Junior Secondary School Administrator and Private Primary School.
The state also secured the first runner-up position in the Best Public Secondary School Teacher category.
# The Executive Chairman of Njikoka Local Government Area, Hon. Ikechukwu Okakpu alongside his Deputy, Hon. Ifunanya Nwanadile, embarked on an extensive inspection and oversight visit to major markets in the council area.
The markets visited include Oye-Agu Abagana Market, Nkwo Enugwu-Ukwu and Afor Nawfia Market.
During the tour, the Chairman interacted with market leaders, union executives and traders, encouraging them on the critical need for environmental cleanliness and proper waste disposal. He emphasized that a clean market environment is in line with the vision of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, for a Clean, Green, Prosperous and Sustainable Anambra State, noting that cleanliness is key to good health and thriving commerce.
Hon. Okakpu also strongly advised traders to shun indiscriminate roadside sales and trading along the road corridors, urging them to move into the designated market stalls for their safety and for free flow of traffic.
He assured the traders that his administration will continue to improve market infrastructure and create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive in Njikoka.
# Burger King has launched BK Jollof rice in Awka in collaboration with Chef “T” during which free Jollof rice was shared to members of the public.
Speaking at the event, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Burger King Nigeria, Mr Rushdi Ibrahim said they are partnering with Chef “T” to get closer home to more Nigerians by launching the BK Jollof rice to meet expectations of the people as rice has remained a staple food in many households and disclosed that Burger King came into Nigeria five years ago and is operating 24 restaurants in nine different states with primary objective of providing quality, safe and healthy food in a friendly environment and is targeting to open more restaurants.

# The fourth Dunukofia Congress of Councillors has held its valedictory session to mark the end of its two-year legislative tenure which commenced in 2024.
In his valedictory speech,”the Leader of Dunukofia Congress of Councillors, Rt Hon Chidimma Okeke expressed his gratitude, first to his constituents, Dunukofia lawmakers and the Executive for their support and commitment to duty which resulted in meaningful progress of the council and rapid development of Dunukofia Local government area.
Okeke revealed that in two years, the fourth Dunukofia Congress of Councillors worked very hard to ensure that the local government achieved infrastructural, economic, social and political transformation that benefited Ndi Dunukofia by introducing legislations that addressed numerous challenges within various sectors.
In his remarks, the Mayor of Dunukofia Local Government Area, Barrister Chijioke Ozumba, represented by the Deputy Mayor of the local government, Mrs Ujunwa Chinweze disclosed that in the last two years, Barrister Ozumba opened shops and equipped them with goods for many youths in Dunukofia, constructed over one kilometre road in each of the six communities that make up Dunukofia, built 24 lock-up shops for Nawgu community, empowered thousands of petty traders in the local government, built the first-ever Dunukofia legislative complex, improved the welfare of workers, addressed insecurity in the area, and rebuilt dilapidated buildings in public schools within the local government among others.
# The State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, Commandant Maku Olatunde, has urged the NSCDC Anambra Staff Cooperative Investment and Credit Society Limited to uphold unity and financial discipline.
Commandant Maku made the call during the 17th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Cooperative House in Awka.
He praised the leadership of the society for promoting transparency, accountability and prudent financial management, emphasizing that the society’s ongoing success depends not only on effective leadership but also on the active and responsible participation of members.
The State Commandant also paid tribute to the founding fathers of the cooperative, acknowledging their vision and sacrifice which laid a solid foundation for its current success.
In her address, the Director of Cooperatives, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Anambra State, Mrs. Chinyere Odoegbunam, urged members to fulfil their financial obligations promptly and encouraged eligible officers and men to join the society.
Highlighting the need for growth, she advised the society to broaden its investment horizons. “While lending remains an important aspect of the society, we must also pursue carefully selected and professionally managed investments that generate sustainable income and long-term value for members,” she said.
# Rangers International FC of Enugu have secured bragging rights in the Oriental Derby after defeating fellow South-East rivals Abia Warriors 3-1 at their temporary home, the Awka City Stadium, Anambra State.
The Flying Antelopes produced a strong performance to claim all three points, with Godwin Obaje opening the scoring in the 37th minute before captain Chidiebere Nwobodo doubled the advantage four minutes into the second half.
Abia Warriors reduced the deficit from the penalty spot, but Rangers held firm before Akorode Daniel sealed the victory with a stoppage-time goal in the 95th minute.
The result represents another significant statement from the defending NPFL champions, who continue their impressive start to the campaign.
With the Matchweek 7 victory, the Fidelis Ilechukwu-led side remain top of the NPFL table with 16 points.
# The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Anambra State Branch, has re-elected Comrade Henry Ifeanyichukwu Ezeoke as its Chairman for a second term.
Ezeoke was returned unopposed on Saturday alongside 10 other executive members at a peaceful election held at the Judiciary Headquarters in Awka, Anambra State.
Other elected officers are Comrade Obuka Christopher Chidi, Vice Chairman; Comrade Nwezi Ugochukwu, Assistant Secretary; Comrade Mogbogu Damian Ikenna, Treasurer; Comrade Anierobi Njaka Phina, Financial Secretary; and Comrade Robert Madueke Ifeoma Olive, Assistant Financial Secretary.
Others are Comrade Ejike Samuel Obiora, Auditor; Comrade Okonkwo James Ngesina Esq., Legal Adviser; Comrade Ananwude Alex, Publicity Secretary; Comrade Anutu Susan Chiekwo, Provost; and Comrade Nweje Francis Nwike, Organising Secretary.
The election was conducted under the supervision of the National Vice President of JUSUN, South-East, Comrade Chinedu Nwachukwu Eze, who was accompanied by other officers of the union from the South-East Zone and the national secretariat.
In his acceptance speech, Ezeoke thanked God for what he described as a historic and rancour-free election, noting that JUSUN elections in Anambra had previously been characterised by keen contests and controversies.
