# Over 500 persons have benefited from a free medical outreach organised by Comareg Healthcare Foundation in Ndiokpalaeze, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The one-day outreach held at Ndiokpalaeze Town Hall provided the villagers with free medical consultations, screenings, health education and referral services.
Speaking at the event, Founder and Executive Director of Comareg Healthcare Foundation, Princess Nwando Onyeagwalam, who was represented by Mr. Peter Ubakeze, said the foundation was established in 2019 to advance healthcare delivery at the grassroots and address inequalities in access to quality healthcare.
She explained that the foundation was established in memory of her late parents, Sir Reginald and Lady Comfort Okoli, whose lives were dedicated to serving humanity, and urged residents to take advantage of the free medical services provided.
The President General of Ndiokpalaeze Improvement Union, Barrister Uchenna Obiorah, commended the foundation for bringing the initiative to the community, describing it as a worthy contribution to the wellbeing of the people, while Prince Emeka Okoli, who represented the Traditional Ruler of Ndiokpalaeze Community, Igwe Frederick Okoli, commended the foundation for sustaining the family’s commitment to helping people in need and expressed hope that subsequent editions of the outreach would be expanded to reach more residents.
The Gender Desk Officer, Anambra State Ministry of Health, Chioma Offor, and the Executive Director of Creative Mind Centre for Youth and Community Development, Ugochi Freeman, sensitised the villagers on gender-based violence and child protection, urging victims and witnesses of abuse to report cases to the appropriate authorities, stressing that gender-based violence affects women, men and children.
They called for value reorientation and greater accountability; beginning from the family, urging parents and community members to take responsibility for protecting children and preventing sexual and gender-based violence.
# The Chairman of Anaocha Local Government Area, Hon. Rome Ibekwe, has commissioned a health centre at Umubiala, Agulu, and opened newly constructed open stalls for market women at Nkwo Adazi-Enu.
The projects, according to Ibekwe, are part of his administration’s efforts to improve healthcare, healthy living and the general wellbeing of residents across the local government area.
At Nkwo Adazi-Enu, the council chairman had earlier sunk and commissioned a solar-powered borehole that provides reticulated water within the market, aimed at promoting proper hygiene and improving the health and comfort of traders.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremonies, Ibekwe said improving the health and living conditions of the people remained a top priority of his administration, noting that the agenda aligns with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s efforts to make quality healthcare accessible to Ndi Anambra.
He explained that the health centre was delivered through the community partnership model and was in line with the Aku Luo Uno mantra, aimed at encouraging development through collective efforts and bringing meaningful development closer to the people.
Ibekwe promised to post permanent health workers to the facility to ensure residents have access to medical services whenever the need arises.
He commended the people of Umubiala, Agulu, for their commitment to community development and urged other indigenes to emulate them by bringing their resources home to contribute to the development of their communities and the state.
The Anaocha mayor also charged the market women at Nkwo Adazi-Enu to maintain high standards of hygiene within the market, while urging them to continue supporting the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) administration.
# The Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, has urged women across the state to embrace agriculture as a viable pathway to economic empowerment, self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods.
Onyekesi made the call at the flag-off ceremony of the 2026 International Year for Women Farmers, organised by the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Anambra State Government, through the IFAD-Assisted Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP-AF) under the State Ministry of Agriculture.
The event, held at the Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) Complex, Awka, was themed, “Investing in Women Agrifood Systems and Securing the Future for Resilience.” It brought together government officials, women farmers and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector from across the state.
Speaking at the ceremony, Onyekesi commended the Federal Government, Anambra State Government and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) for prioritising women in agricultural value-chain development.
She also commended the First Lady of Anambra State, Dr. Mrs. Nonye Soludo, for her consistent advocacy for women’s empowerment, noting that her various initiatives continue to complement government efforts aimed at improving the welfare, productivity and economic independence of women, including those engaged in agriculture.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare to supporting programmes and initiatives that improve the livelihoods of women across the state, in line with the vision of the First Lady and the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
She urged women farmers to remain committed to agriculture and take advantage of opportunities across the agricultural value chain, assuring them of the continued support of the state government in building a more resilient, inclusive and productive agricultural sector.
# The Federal Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education and The Carter Center organized a Task 3 Sensitization Programme for community leaders and selected school head teachers in Oyi Local Government Area.
The programme was held at the Oyi LGA Headquarters, Nteje and was aimed at sensitizing participants ahead of the School-Based Testing exercise to determine whether Lymphatic Filariasis infection is still present in the communities.
The school-based testing will involve selected schools in Oyi LGA to check if transmission of the disease is still ongoing, as part of efforts to confirm elimination.
In his welcome address, the Oyi LGA Supervisor/Councillor for Health, Hon. Ikechukwu John, thanked the Federal Ministry of Health and The Carter Center for bringing the programme to Oyi.
He appreciated them for their commitment to the health of Ndi Oyi and advised community leaders, parents, and school heads to cooperate fully with the health workers during the testing exercise.
He stressed that the testing is for the good of our children and our communities and urged everyone to support the team when they visit their schools and communities.
# There was jubilation at Federal Polytechnic, Oko as a significant milestone was recorded in the history of the institution with the presentation of five brand-new Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) cars to the Polytechnic’s Principal Officers.
The historic event took place in front of Administration Block I, popularly known as Aso Rock, where the five gleaming new vehicles were parked in readiness for the presentation.
The Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, who presided over the ceremony, assembled the Principal Officers and formally handed over the keys of the official vehicles to each of them.
The beneficiaries of the new official vehicles are the: Deputy Rector, Administration, Venerable Dr. Ferguson Ezeokafor, Deputy Rector, Academic, Dr. Nkiruka Akabuike, Registrar, Mr. Akeem Adeleke Ayola, Polytechnic Librarian, Dr. Nwabu Ezemba and Bursar, Mr. Jasper Anunike
Speaking during the brief ceremony, the Rector described the provision of the official vehicles as part of her administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for the Principal Officers to effectively discharge their responsibilities and contribute to the continued transformation of the Polytechnic.
Dr. Awuzie thereafter prayed for the beneficiaries, asking God to guide, protect and grant them wisdom as they use the vehicles in the service of the Polytechnic and humanity.
# The Worldwide Organisation for Women Africa, WOW Africa, has organised its 5th Annual Leadership Programme in Awka, Anambra State, to equip young people with the knowledge, skills and values needed to navigate an evolving world.
The programme, themed “Lead the Shift: Youth Driving Change in an Evolving World,” brought together students from Model Secondary School, Iyiagu; Community Secondary School, Amansea; Community Secondary School, Awkuzu; Unity Secondary School, Nnokwa; Abanna Secondary School, Abatete; Community High School, Nanka; Girls’ High School, Uga; Community Secondary School, Oko; Community Secondary School, Amawbia; and Capital City Secondary School, Awka.
Speaking on the essence of the programme, the South-East Coordinator of WOW Africa, Mrs. Ethel Eruchalu, said the initiative was designed to give young people the right orientation, knowledge and values needed to prepare for the future noting that the current edition was the fifth since the programme began, expressed satisfaction with the quality of questions raised by the students, describing their participation as an indication that they were engaging meaningfully with the issues discussed, particularly Artificial Intelligence even as she cautioned the youths against depending entirely on AI, stressing the importance of critical thinking in the use of technology.
According to her, while AI can make tasks easier, young people must independently assess information generated by the technology to avoid accepting inaccurate information, and explained that WOW Africa was not restricted to females, noting that the organisation’s activities are aimed at contributing to the wellbeing of families and society, with the current leadership programme targeting young people between the ages of thirteen and twenty.
# The Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, has hailed the mayor of Idemili North Local Government Area, Hon. Stanley Nkwoka over his victory in the just concluded local government election in the area.
Speaking to journalists shortly after the election result was declared at the local government headquarters, Ogidi, Mefor noted that the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), is on course for a clean sweep of all 21 Local Government Areas in the state.
He attributed the landslide to the performance of Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, saying the governor’s re-election with about 73% of the votes created momentum for APGA at the grassroots.
The Commissioner, an indigene of Idemili North, commended voters for the massive turnout despite APGA running unopposed in the LGA. He said over 31,000 voters participated in the affirmation process.
# The District Governor of Rotary International, District 9142, Rtn. Chibuzor Asogwa, has congratulated the Secretary to the Anambra State Government (SSG), Hon. Chiamaka Nnake, on her emergence as the first female SSG in the history of Anambra State.
Rtn. Asogwa stated this when he led a delegation of the Rotary District 9142 on a courtesy visit to the SSG at the Light House, Awka.
The District Governor described the appointment of Hon. Nnake as a significant milestone for women and an indication of the confidence reposed in her capacity, experience and track record of service.
According to him, the Anambra State Government would undoubtedly benefit from the dedication, commitment, organisational skills and achievements that come with her presence in such a strategic position.
He commended the Governor of Anambra State for recognising and rewarding the hard work, dedication and achievements of Hon. Nnake as the former Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning by entrusting her with a greater responsibility as SSG.
Rtn. Asogwa expressed confidence in the ability of the SSG to succeed in her new assignment, noting that she possesses the requisite experience and capacity to make a remarkable impact and achieve even more than her predecessors in the administration.
He assured her of Rotary International’s goodwill and support, stressing the organisation’s commitment to service to humanity and community development.
Responding, the SSG, Hon. Chiamaka Nnake, expressed her warm appreciation to the District Governor and members of Rotary District 9142 for the visit and congratulatory message.
Hon. Nnake disclosed that she has several good friends within the Rotary family and has attended numerous Rotary functions over the years at the invitation of members, describing herself as an associate of the Rotary Club.
# The Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare has trained selected staff from its eight departments on the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law and other key issues relating to sexual violence, as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s response to gender-based violence.
The two-day capacity-building workshop, held at Don Ritz Hotel, Udoka Estate, Awka, was approved by the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Hon. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi. Staff from the Social Welfare, Women Affairs, Rehabilitation, and Child Development departments formed the largest group of participants due to the nature of their responsibilities.
Participants were encouraged to work collaboratively and effectively communicate accurate information on sexual violence in both formal and informal community settings. They were urged to engage residents, raise awareness, and promote timely reporting of sexual violence cases.
Speaking during the workshop, the Project Coordinator of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Belgium, Bob Francis Makalande, represented by Health Promotion Supervisor Jane Ibezim, said the organization provides free and confidential medical and psychological support to survivors of sexual violence at the Primary Health Centre, Mgbakwu, in Awka North Local Government Area.
According to him, the facility operates from monday to friday, offering medical care, post-violence prevention treatment, mental health services, emotional support, and mental health education for men, women, and children affected by sexual violence. The workshop, themed “Social Welfare Workshop: Sexual Violence Awareness Raising and Community Engagement,” was sponsored by MSF Belgium.
# The Christian Association of Nigeria Women Wing (WOWICAN), Idemili North Chapter, Anambra State, has commended the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo for its strides in infrastructure development and provision of free education across the state.
The chapter’s Coordinator, Arc. Ugochi Aniakor, made the commendation in her presidential address at the 2026 Annual Women’s Convention held at St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church, Nkpor.
Arc. Aniakor, however, urged the state government to pay greater attention to rural road networks in some local government areas. She also appealed for increased youth employment and empowerment opportunities, alongside stronger support for women-owned Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
Speaking on the theme, “Preserving the Truth in a Compromised Age,” the guest speaker, Barr. Mercy Ndubuisi, charged women to uphold truth, remain steadfast in their christian faith and serve as positive examples in society.
The sub-themes, “Wise Woman: Building the Nation” and “Empowering the Male Child in a Contemporary Society,” underscored the significant roles women play as mothers, mentors, community builders and nation builders.
Barr. Ndubuisi stressed that women have a crucial responsibility to raise responsible children and contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of their communities and the nation at large.
The convention featured free medical check-ups and a health talk organised by Ritatina Foundation, presentation of awards, skill acquisition training, as well as the launch of youth and women empowerment initiatives.
