# The Anambra State Government is considering a Public-Private-Community Partnership (PPCP) to confront the Odu Ukpaka land gully erosion site at Akabor Obiofia Nnewichi, Nnewi.
The proposal emerged during an inspection of the site by the Commissioner for Environment, Dr Clem Aguiyi, who assessed ongoing intervention work by Solid Cephars Ltd, an indigenous real estate company and developer.
The company has already begun major erosion control efforts at the site.
Commending its Chief Executive Officer, Mr Dozie Nwizu, Dr Aguiyi praised the company’s investment in Anambra and its commitment to slowing the advance of the devastating gully.
He said the purpose of the visit was to examine how the state government, Solid Cephars Ltd and the host community could combine efforts to extend the intervention to Mmili Agu, a stretch covering more than three kilometres.
Dr Aguiyi described PPCP arrangements as essential to addressing Anambra’s erosion crisis, noting that the state has nearly 1,200 active erosion sites.
With government resources unable to meet the scale of the challenge, he said, stronger collaboration with private investors and communities remains the most practical way forward.
Speaking to journalists, Mr Nwizu disclosed that Solid Cephars Ltd acquired the property less than four months ago and had already invested more than ₦500 million in sand filling and soil stabilisation.
He estimated that completing the project would require over ₦1.5 billion because of the difficult terrain and the scale of the erosion.
Mr Nwizu warned that the work completed so far represents only about 10 per cent of the affected area and explained that stopping at that point could allow the erosion to return and expand within a few years.
According to him, a partnership involving the Anambra State Government and the community would make it possible to extend the control measures to Mmili Agu River and permanently halt the erosion’s advance.
# The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Anambra Broadcasting Service, Mr. Chris Molokwu, has called on the staff of the establishment to take their jobs seriously in order to move the broadcasting station forward.
Mr. Molokwu stated this while addressing the staff of ABS Onitsha Station. He commended the new Head of Station, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Eze, for the noticeable changes she made at Onitsha Station within a few days in office, and urged her to keep it up.
The ABS boss urged them to continue with their good job and design new ways of doing it better, knowing fully well of the existence of their competitors, while calling for peace and synergy among them.
He maintained that a lot has to be done, and that everyone must be part of it to uplift the establishment and restore it to its former glory, and later informed the staff about the plan of the establishment to celebrate the New Yam Festival, while urging the staff to support the already constituted Planning Committee for the event.
# The people of Awgbu Community in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State have organized a grand reception in honour of the immediate past Chief of Staff to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Chief Ernest Ezeajughi, following his service in government.
Speaking at the event, Governor Chukwuma Soludo commended Chief Ezeajughi for his contributions while serving as Chief of Staff described him as a man who worked with dexterity and uniqueness.
According to the Governor, Chief Ezeajughi’s exceptional qualities would continue to take him to greater heights globally.
Prof. Soludo noted that henceforth, road construction across Anambra State will be guided by some strategic considerations, including the economic importance of the road, traffic volume and the cost of construction and roads that will open up communities.
The Governor explained that his administration would continue to build roads that are economically important and capable of opening up communities for development. He said the proposed Aerotropolis development would have a touch in Awgbu, assuring the people that the community would be part of the development agenda of the state government.
He also thanked the people of Awgbu for honouring and celebrating their son, describing such recognition as rare, and urged them to continue supporting the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in the forthcoming election.
Speaking, the Convener of Awgbu Progressive Minds, Mr Emeka Owoh, described the reception as the first of its kind for an indigene of the community who served in public office.
Mr Owoh said Chief Ezeajughi served with a clear sense of direction, integrity and transparency, noting that the celebration was not only for posterity but also to teach younger generations the true meaning of selfless public service.
# The Anambra State Police Command has denied reports alleging that it arrested the sister of a wanted suspect because of her relationship with him and also demanded ₦600,000 for her release.
The Command, in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, described the allegation as misleading, explaining that the woman, identified as Nwosu Chikamso Jennifer, was solely arrested in connection with an ongoing investigation into cult-related killings in Awka.
The statement followed a Sunday publication by Sahara Reporters, based on a letter reportedly written by the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) and signed by its Executive Director, Mr Okechukwu Nwanguma.
The publication alleged that Jennifer was arrested on August 31, 2026, not over any offence allegedly committed by her, but because of her relationship with her brother, Nwosu Kenechukwu, who was reportedly wanted in connection with an alleged murder case.
# The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council football team defeated the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) team 7–1 in a novelty football match organised as part of activities marking the 2026 Press Week and the 35th anniversary of the NUJ in Anambra State.
The match, played at the Paul University Football Field, Awka, saw the Coach Lawrence Nwimo-led NUJ team dominate proceedings from start to finish, producing an entertaining display that thrilled spectators.
Speaking with journalists after the match, the Anambra State FRSC Commander, CC Bridget Asekhauno, congratulated the NUJ on its 35th anniversary, describing the two organisations as partners in the development of society.
She commended the NUJ for organising the novelty match and expressed optimism that the relationship between the two organisations would continue to grow.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the NUJ, Anambra State Council, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, PhD, described the match as an opportunity for members of both organisations to exercise, bond and strengthen their relationship.
Dr. Odogwu said the match should not be viewed strictly in terms of victory or defeat, stressing that “there is no victor, no vanquished,” as the primary objective was to promote unity, friendship and physical fitness.
He used the occasion to invite members of the public to the grand finale of the 2026 Press Week and the NUJ Man of the Year Award scheduled for Thursday.
# The Guidance Counselor of Ozalla Primary School, Ifitedunu, Dunukofia Local Government Area, Mr. Solomon Nwankwo, advised pupils and students to observe some safety measures and stay abreast of their education during the holidays.
Mr. Nwankwo, who gave the advice noted that the holiday is a time to rest, but it is also an opportunity to grow, learn, and prepare for greater success ahead, and encouraged them to stay safe at all times, avoid dangerous places, reckless behaviour, and bad company.
The Guidance Counselor charged the pupils and students to continue learning, read their books daily, complete their holiday assignments, and develop the habit of reading beyond schoolwork.
He further told them to respect their parents and elders, be obedient, polite, and willing to assist with household responsibilities.
# Health stakeholders in Anambra State have agreed on a new community-based approach to increase health insurance enrolment, especially among women of child-bearing age, by taking advantage of the ongoing ward-to-ward National Identification Number (NIN) registration exercise.
The decision was reached during a multi-stakeholder roundtable organised under the Strengthening Public Accountability for Results and Knowledge (SPARK 2) project.
The meeting, supported by the International Budget Partnership (IBP), brought together government agencies, civil society organisations, traditional leaders and community groups.
Participants agreed that stronger cooperation among stakeholders is necessary to make healthcare more accessible to women and other vulnerable groups across the state.
As part of the resolution, Ward Development Committees, town unions, women’s groups and local government officials will work together to encourage residents to register for their NIN and enrol in the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA).
The stakeholders noted that taking health insurance registration closer to communities and improving public awareness would help more pregnant women, children and indigent residents benefit from healthcare services provided under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF).
Speaking at the meeting, Permanent Secretary of the Anambra State Ministry of Health, Dr. Obiageli Uchebo, said the compulsory NIN requirement remains one of the biggest challenges preventing many people from joining the health insurance scheme. She explained that although a NIN is required before beneficiaries can access healthcare through ASHIA under the BHCPF, many poor residents, children and elderly persons have not yet obtained one.
# The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, has ordered an investigation into the environmental compliance status of a mining site at Trans Nkisi, Onitsha, following concerns over extensive land degradation and its possible contribution to the growing gully erosion threatening the community.
The directive followed an inspection visit to the site during which the commissioner was accompanied by leaders of the Trans Nkisi community.
The visit formed part of the ministry’s ongoing assessment of environmentally sensitive locations across the state in line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Fifth Pillar of Development, Environment and Urban Regeneration.
During the inspection, Dr. Aguiyi observed a major gully erosion site close to the mining area, noting that a natural water channel had been obstructed by nearby structures, forcing stormwater to flow through alternative routes and accelerating erosion in the area.
He expressed concern over mining activities taking place close to the river corridor, warning that continued excavation without adequate environmental safeguards could further degrade the ecosystem and increase the risk of environmental hazards.
Speaking with the site manager, who said the mining operation is privately owned, the commissioner directed the ministry to determine whether the operators obtained the required Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval and other statutory environmental permits before commencing operations.
Dr. Aguiyi directed that the Ministries of Environment, Physical Planning, and Works should collaborate to assess the level of compliance with existing environmental regulations and recommend appropriate remedial measures where necessary.
He reaffirmed the Soludo administration’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges through sustainable policies and interventions aimed at restoring degraded landscapes, protecting critical infrastructure and safeguarding communities vulnerable to erosion and other environmental threats.
# In a significant development for grassroots football in Nigeria, One-Goal-Nigeria has appointed the Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA) and former Super Eagles defender, Gen. Chikelue Iloenyosi, as the South-East Zonal Coordinator for the maiden edition of the National Renewed Hope Unity Cup.
The appointment places the respected football administrator at the forefront of coordinating the championship across the South-East geopolitical zone, where he will oversee planning, organization, and implementation of the competition aimed at discovering young football talents and promoting national unity through sports.
The National Renewed Hope Unity Cup is a landmark grassroots football initiative designed to harness the immense talents of Nigerian youths while fostering peace, unity, and healthy competition among communities nationwide. The tournament is expected to attract participation from all 774 Local Government Areas of the federation, making it one of the most ambitious grassroots football competitions in the country.
Observers within Nigeria’s football community have described Gen. Iloenyosi’s appointment as a well-deserved recognition of his years of dedication to football development, youth empowerment, and sports administration.
# Engr. Eric Nnamdi Anyamene, the NDC candidate for Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, has continued his engagement with key community institutions ahead of the 2027 House of Representatives election, visiting two Catholic churches in Awada to seek prayers, guidance, and support from the clergy.
