The People of Umuchu community in Aguata Council Area have celebrated their new yam festival 2026 amidst pomp and pageantry.
The triple event which commenced on Friday 4th September 2026 tagged Iba-Ubi at the Crystal Palace of Igwe Umuchu, HRH, Igwe Godson O. Ezechukwu where the Royal father of Umuchu celebrated the new yam and declared it safe for consumption.
On Saturday, September 5, Ndi Umuchu came out in their numbers for a community-wide celebration of the New Yam Festival at the Umuchu Mini Stadium which featured presentations of kolanuts, new yam cultivation competition, cultural dances and masquerade displays, while the New Yam Festival Carnival on Saturday September 6 turned out to be the icing on the cake.
Some dignitaries that graced the event were the NDC candidate for Anambra North Senatorial Zone, Chief Ebuka Onunkwo, the Member Representing Aguata I in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Anayo Okpaleke, and the Mayor of Aguata LGA, Prince Dr. Chibueze Oforbuike among others.
Speaking, Igwe Umuchu prayed for good health, Ndi Umuchu both at home and in the diaspora, charging them to remain peaceful, united and hard working to maintain their dignity and contribute selflessly to the continuous growth and development of Umuchu town.
The Chairman of the occasion, Chief Nzubechukwu Uduonu in his opening remark thanked God for life and appealed to Ndi Umuchu to place Umuchu first in anything they are doing.
President General of Umuchu Improvement Union Representative Assembly, UIURA, Hon. Ifeanyi Emegwa in his welcome address noted that Umuchu New Yam is more than just a gathering for merriment, but a core evidence of the identity and cultural heritage, hard work, unity, resilience and dignity in labour.
In their separate comments, the vice Chairman of the occasion, Ogbuefi Ebuka Uzoezie, some prominent Chiefs including the palace/Cabinet Secretary, Prof. Chief Echezona Ifejirika, PRO, Igwe in Council, Chief Emmanuel Obiagwu, High Chief Ebere Akanonu, and Chief Chuks Ononuju among others expressed delight with the peace and unity in Umuchu, wishing Igwe Ezechukwu more years on the throne.
In a vote of thanks, the planning committee chairman, Chief Chimezie Ikeh commended all who played diverse roles in making the triple celebration a huge success praying God to bless Ndi Umuchu.
