The Donald Trump administration will be paying close attention to Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, a US congressman has said, amid ongoing concerns over governance and religious freedoms in Africa’s most populous nation.
Republican Representative Riley Moore of West Virginia told NoireTV that Washington will monitor how the polls are conducted and their outcomes. “We’re certainly going to be watching these results and how these elections unfold and how they’re executed,” Moore said. “And that’s something that myself and the administration are going to be paying very close attention to.”
Moore revealed that the US House is advancing an appropriations bill with “strong and aggressive language” on Nigeria, including provisions related to the persecution of Christians and conditions on security assistance. He described the legislation as likely to become law and binding on future US-Nigeria relations.
The lawmaker, who said he continues to engage directly with President Trump on the issue, emphasised the importance of credible democratic processes in Nigeria.
