Trump Evacuated as Gunfire Disrupts White House Correspondents’ Dinner

US President Donald Trump was swiftly rushed off stage by Secret Service agents during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night after multiple gunshots rang out inside the ballroom at the Washington Hilton hotel.

The incident triggered chaos as hundreds of journalists, politicians and guests ducked under tables for cover before security cleared the venue nearly an hour later.

Trump later confirmed that one Secret Service operative was shot at close range but escaped serious injury thanks to his bulletproof vest. The suspected shooter, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California — a part-time teacher and hotel guest — was apprehended on the spot by Secret Service agents.

“He was apprehended on the scene by very brave soldiers of the Secret Service,” Trump stated, praising the agents’ swift response.

The president added that the operative “was shot from close range, but was saved by his bulletproof vest.”

Allen, who reportedly carried multiple weapons, is expected to face charges in court on Monday. Trump shared a photo of the suspect on his Truth Social platform shortly after the incident.

No other injuries were reported among attendees, including Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who was also present. The dinner, a traditional gathering of journalists and political figures, was interrupted shortly after 8:30 p.m. local time near a security checkpoint.

The event continued under heightened tension as law enforcement, including the Metropolitan Police Department, investigated the shooting. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and police officials later addressed the media on the incident.

The White House Correspondents’ Association has not yet issued a formal statement on the disruption to its flagship annual event. Security experts described the rapid response as a testament to improved protocols around high-profile gatherings.

The suspect’s motive remains unclear as investigations continue. The dramatic evacuation has drawn widespread attention, raising fresh questions about security at major public events in the US capital.
