Why I avoided costly commissioning events as Anambra governor — Obi

NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi on Wednesday explained that he deliberately avoided spending public funds on elaborate commissioning ceremonies during his time as Anambra State governor, arguing that the money was better used to deliver more infrastructure.

Speaking in a radio interview, Obi said he preferred to focus on tangible results rather than media publicity.

“I was not into show media business while I was governor of Anambra because I believed the people I was building for would feel the impact,” Obi said. “If I spent ₦10 million to build a five-classroom block, the commissioning ceremony alone could cost another ₦5 million. Why not add that ₦5 million to the money and build another set of classrooms? What would I gain by wasting public money in the name of commissioning?”

Obi made the remarks in response to questions about why his administration devoted limited resources to media publicity while he was in office.
