World Cup Debutants Cape Verde Hold Spain to Shock Goalless Draw in Opener

World Cup debutants Cape Verde produced one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 tournament so far by holding European champions Spain to a 0-0 draw in their Group H opener on Monday.

The Blue Sharks, ranked as massive underdogs, defended stubbornly throughout and frustrated Spain despite the favourites dominating possession and creating numerous chances at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Goalkeeper Vozinha, at 39 the oldest player at the tournament, delivered several crucial saves to earn man-of-the-match honours on his World Cup debut.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente introduced teenage star Lamine Yamal late in the second half in a bid to break the deadlock, but the visitors held firm with a compact defensive shape.

Cape Verde’s resilient performance earned them a historic first point at the World Cup against one of the pre-tournament favourites.

The result leaves both teams with work to do in Group H, which also features Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.
