Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI owns the domain name dot.com and is redirecting it to its Grok chatbot download page, drawing online attention just as OpenAI launched a new suite of always-on AI agents called Dots.
OpenAI presented the Dots product on Tuesday at its DevDay conference, describing the agents as proactive personal assistants designed to handle complex projects and everyday tasks across applications. The name quickly prompted users to check related web addresses.
Whois domain records show that dot.com changed ownership in July 2026 and is now registered to xAI. Visitors typing the address are sent to the Grok app page rather than any OpenAI site. The more direct match, dots.com, remains under the control of a long-defunct company previously linked to a women’s clothing brand and is not held by OpenAI.
Neither xAI nor OpenAI has publicly commented on the domain situation. TechCrunch reported that it contacted xAI for an explanation but received no immediate response.
Online discussion, including posts that gained millions of views, has focused on the timing. Some users and observers suggested the acquisition could represent a competitive jab in the ongoing rivalry between Musk and OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman. Others noted a more routine possibility: that xAI acquired the address to capture mistyped searches related to its own “bot” products. xAI does not own similar domains such as bot.com or vot.com.
The episode underscores branding challenges in the crowded AI sector, where memorable domain names can influence visibility and user acquisition. OpenAI has not indicated whether it plans any action regarding the addresses.
