Yul Edochie Sparks Outrage by Questioning Peter Obi’s ‘Igbo Identity’

Controversial Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has ignited a fresh wave of social media backlash after publicly declaring that Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, is not a “true Igbo man.”

In a series of posts shared via his social media handles, Edochie questioned the cultural and political authenticity of the former Anambra State governor, claiming that Obi’s brand of politics does not reflect the traditional “bravery” and “warrior spirit” associated with the Igbo people of South-East Nigeria.

”Peter Obi is not a true Igbo man,” Edochie wrote in a statement that quickly went viral. “A true Igbo man is bold, fearless, and stands his ground without playing to the gallery or trying to please everyone at the expense of his people’s dignity.”

“How can you spend many years in power, many years as a successful business man, yet nobody can say he’s successful today because of you.

“You can’t even lift your family members. In Nollywood, there are people who will tell you they’re successful today because of Yul Edochie.

“Not one person can say that about Peter Obi. Are you a saddist? What are you doing with the power God has given you?

“If you can’t lift people around you out of poverty, you simply can’t lift Nigeria out of poverty.”

The actor, who has increasingly become a polarizing figure in entertainment, suggested that Obi’s political approach is too “soft” and lacks the radical edge necessary to liberate the region from its current challenges. He further alleged that the politician is merely a “creation of the media.”

”We need leaders who represent the true essence of the East, not those who use a fake sense of humility to deceive the masses while doing nothing to stop the marginalization of our land,” the actor added.

The comments have drawn swift condemnation from supporters of the “Obidient” movement and prominent Igbo cultural groups. Many critics accused Edochie of seeking “cheap relevance” and attempting to distract from his own personal controversies by attacking a figure who remains immensely popular in the South-East.

Edochie, who once harbored presidential ambitions himself before stepping down to support the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has previously faced criticism for his stance on regional politics and his vocal support for President Bola Tinubu.

Despite the heavy criticism, the actor remained defiant, later posting that he is “entitled to his opinion” and would not be bullied into silence by “online trolls.”
