Members of the Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Environment has visited the administrative headquarters of Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) as part of their familiarization visit to Ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) under their purview.

The Chairman of the Committee Hon. Fredrick Ezenwa, member representing Onitsha South one constituency while speaking to the members of ASWAMA stated that the visit was for them to get themselves acquainted with MDAs under their supervision.
According to him, ” The state government is desirous of lifting Anambra to that status of a clean, green and livable homeland, our duty as a Committee is to assist you in ensuring that the vision of the state government is achieved”
“From time to time we will come around to see what you are doing, your prospects, your challenges and profer possible ways of making your operations better and sustainable” the chairman noted.
In his remarks, The Minority Leader Rt. Hon. Johnbosco Akaegbobi, member representing Nnewi South two in his remark emphasized the need for proper sensitization of the residents on the proper ways of disposing their waste. He urged ASWAMA to invest more on modern techniques in waste management.
Hon. Akaegbobi tasked ASWAMA to properly kit their waste collectors inorder to abate the risk of exposing them to health hazards, even as he encouraged residents to play their own part through the prompt payment of their waste management levies.
Hon. Tony Muobike, the member representing Aguata two constituency lauded the agency for having maintained a good progress in line with the vision of the Governor Chukwuma Soludo. He assured that the Committee intends to work in synergy with ASWAMA for a cleaner Anambra State.
Muobike suggested ways of improving the operations of the agency including the provision of concrete mini receptacles in strategic points along the major roads and waste bins inside commuter vehicles.
Deputy Minority Leader Rt. Hon. Douglas Egbona, the member representing Onitsha North one constituency observed that the management of waste is a herculian task. He encouraged the MD and his team to remain steadfast always. He stressed again on the need for proper orientation of our people.

In his response, the Managing Director of ASWAMA Mr. Mike Ozoemena thanked the Committee members for coming and for their interest in the proper cleanliness of the state.
According to Ozoemena “Ours is to add more value to what we met when we came here; I cannot in all honesty leave this seat without Anambra being better than I met it and so far, we have been moving in that direction”, he noted.
Ozoemena further reiterated his vision of institutionalizing the operations of ASWAMA so that whoever comes in after him will meet the structure already on ground which will lead to more efficiency and optimal service delivery.
He thanked the Governor of Anambra State for his commitment and support for the agency, noting that the cleanliness of the state is paramount in his agenda.
The MD appreciated the Committee once again and expressed the readiness of the agency to collaborate with them.
