Anambra State Market Safty Bill, Passes Second Reading

A bill for a law to ensure the safty and protection  of markets in Anambra state has been read for the second time at plenary on Tuesday 23rd January 2024.

The member representing Idemili North constituency Hon. Kingsley Udemezue who sponsored the bill, while leading the debate said if passed into law, it will assist various markets in Anambra state.

Udemezue recalled the recent fire outbrake in Nkpor markets in his counstituency were many businesses lost their resources. 

“This law will help markets set up standards and measures that will aid and reduce to the the number of fire incident in Anambra markets. 

Speaking in support of the bill Hon. Ejike Okechukwu (Anaocha two), Hon. Nigeria Mbachu (Awka South one), Hon. Chukwunonso Igwe (Ogbaru one), Hon. Jude Umennajiego (Onitsha South two), Hon. Emma Nwafor (Orumber South), Hon. Tony Muobike (Aguata two) and Minority Whip Hon. Paul Obu (Orumber North), in their separate submissions highlighted the importance of the bill and why it should be passed into law.

“This bill is all about ensuring safety in Anambra markets. It talks about the inclusiveness of technology such as the CCTV which is a welcome development. It will help in tracking those who commit crime and monitor those who are trying to tresspass. The penalties are clearly stipulated. 

” Any market who fails to follow this rules and regulations will be closed down because this is for the good of ndi Anambra and the market. 

“A taskforce should be created to ensure the compliance of this bill when passed. 

“Our markets needs to be more organized so as to have smooth movement and this is what this bill has come to do’. They lawmakers stated.

Anambra Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze referred the bill to the committee on Commerce and Industry, and committee on environment. 

He urged the chairman to report back to the house in two weeks time.
