Federal Government Hails Anambra’s Environmental Leadership At €175M Climate Project Launch

In a significant endorsement, the Federal Government has lauded Anambra State as Nigeria’s leading example in tackling erosion, waste management, and environmental degradation, during the launch of the €175 million Nigeria Climate Adaptation – Erosion and Watershed Project (NEWMAP) over the weekend in Abuja.

The commendation came from the Honourable Minister of Environment, Alhaji Balaraba Abbas Lawal, during an interactive session with Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Dr. Felix Odimegwu where the Minister described Anambra as “the most proactive and effective state” in environmental sustainability efforts across the country.

NEWMAP is a joint initiative of the European Investment Bank and the Nigerian Government, aimed at addressing the urgent threats of flooding, gully erosion, and land degradation afflicting vulnerable communities. The €175 million project is set to scale climate adaptation efforts nationwide and Anambra is poised to largely benefit from the intervention.

Highlighting Anambra’s achievements, the Minister noted the state’s “unprecedented community-driven initiatives, rapid response to erosion threats, and model waste management systems,” praising them as a blueprint for environmental governance in Nigeria.

“Dr. Odimegwu stands out as one of the most active Commissioners for Environment in the country,” said Alhaji Lawal. “His results-driven approach has significantly reversed years of ecological damage in Anambra. The state has truly set a new benchmark.”

In his response, Engr. Dr. Felix Odimegwu expressed appreciation for the recognition and attributed the progress to collaborative efforts among the citizens (Ndi Anambra), government institutions, and development partners.

“This recognition belongs to every community that chose action over apathy,” said Dr. Odimegwu. “We remain committed to urgency, innovation, and sustainable environmental protection.”

Once known as one of the most erosion-prone states in Nigeria, Anambra has made remarkable strides through climate-smart urban planning, decentralized waste recycling programs, and grassroots sustainability projects.

Dr. Odimegwu also reassured the Federal Government and the European Union delegation of Anambra’s continued commitment to progressive environmental reforms and climate resilience.

Environmental experts and civil society organizations praised the Federal Government’s acknowledgment, calling on other states to emulate Anambra’s model in addressing Nigeria’s escalating ecological crises.
