A clergyman has stirred controversy by predicting that OPay, Nigeria’s popular mobile payment platform, will collapse between December 2025 and January 2026, and has urged users to pull out their money immediately, according to InformationNG.
In a video that has gone viral on social media, Prophet Aliyu Barnabas of Mercy and Grace Deliverance Ministry in Ukum, Benue State, claimed OPay was operating as a “ritual scheme” and warned that “customers will wake up one day to find their money gone.”
He specifically cautioned that funds could disappear during the December–January window, citing spiritual underpinnings for the predicted breakdown.
The prophecy triggered widespread concern among OPay users, some of whom began discussing withdrawal plans. Meanwhile, fintech experts have criticized the claim as destabilizing, urging Nigerians to rely on regulatory safeguards such as the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) backing and verified public statements.
So far, OPay has not officially responded to the warning.
