Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, died Wednesday afternoon after collapsing in his office in Yenagoa, according to family sources and eyewitness reports. He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Yenagoa where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 PM local time, prompting an immediate emergency transfer to the hospital. Eyewitnesses at the scene noted that the deputy governor “appeared to be in a serious condition” as he was hurried into the emergency unit.
While the specific, official cause of the medical emergency has not been publicly confirmed, multiple sources have suggested the collapse may be linked to a possible cardiac complication. A source close to the late deputy governor attributed the sudden collapse to the “demanding workload” associated with his office.
Following confirmation of his death, security operatives were deployed to control access at the hospital premises, as senior government officials and political figures began arriving to offer condolences and show solidarity.
As of the time of reporting, attempts to reach the deputy governor’s media aide, Mr. Doubara Atasi, for an official statement were unsuccessful. The Bayelsa State government is expected to issue an official declaration and provide details on burial arrangements soon.
