# Determined to enforce to the letter the free education policy of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the Chairman, Post Primary Schools Service Commission (PPSSC), Professor Nkechi Ikediugwu, has directed the principals of Community Secondary School, Awkuzu, Mrs Cecilia Okeke, and Community Secondary School, Igbakwu, Mrs Patricia Ezeabiakwa, to step aside from their positions.

Ikediugwu gave the directive during unannounced visits to the schools, where she discovered that the principal of Community Secondary School, Awkuzu, alongside some teachers, was collecting amounts ranging from ten thousand naira to forty thousand naira from newly admitted students, contrary to the free education policy of the Soludo administration, while similar infractions were also recorded at Community Secondary School, Igbakwu, where the principal and teachers were extorting money from students under various guises.

She asked the two principals to step aside from their positions, hand over to their vice principals (administration) with immediate effect, personally refund every kobo collected from the students within seven days, and submit proof of refund to the headquarters of PPSSC, Awka, while the teachers involved were summoned to appear at the PPSSC headquarters on Monday, 15 December, to collect letters of query and await further disciplinary action, which may include suspension.

# Poised to creating awareness on the new tax law passed by the National Assembly and scheduled to take effect in 2026, the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS) has held a maiden tax summit to help Ndi Anambra, and by extension Nigerians, understand the provisions of the law, how to avoid falling foul of it, and how to comply judiciously with its requirements.

In his speech, the AIRS Executive Chairman, Dr. Greg Ezeilo, said the summit was aimed at demystifying the apprehension people have towards the new tax law, encouraging compliance rather than offending, noting that the provisions are punitive, even as the law takes into cognizance the concerns of Nigerians by exempting low-income earners and enabling small businesses within certain thresholds to grow without paying tax.

In her lecture, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Anambra State on Internal Revenue Service (Technical), Hon. Kate Oyeka, whose presentation focused on the informal sector and the new tax law, emphasized that it is no longer business as usual for businesses that hide under the informal sector and make huge profits without paying tax, as technology would be deployed to ensure compliance with the law.

In his lecture on the provisions of the new tax law, a tax expert, Mr. Chijioke Uwaegbute, explained that individuals and businesses earning between eight hundred thousand naira and one point three million naira after all deductibles are exempt from tax, while companies earning between fifty million naira and one hundred million naira after deductibles are also exempt, advising that it has become imperative for business owners and individuals alike to engage the services of tax experts, as the narrative has changed.

The Managing Director of the Anambra State Signage and Advertisement Agency (ANSAA), Mr. Odili Ujubuonu, noted that people are more willing to pay their taxes when they are better informed and can see the impact of their tax payments, adding that the new tax law is in the interest of all, especially as low-income earners are exempted and pay less.

The event also featured a panel session where broader issues surrounding the tax law were discussed, questions were asked and answered, and awards were presented.

# The Managing Director of the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA), Chief Mike Ozoemena, has outlined the agency’s ongoing reforms aimed at improving waste evacuation and strengthening environmental cleanliness across the state.

During a media chat in Awka, Chief Ozoemena said that under the Soludo administration, ASWAMA has prioritised the clearing of long-standing refuse heaps in major urban centres, noting that locations such as the Awka roundabout previously suffered heavy waste accumulation that affected residents and road users.

He said the agency received strong backing from Governor Chukwuma Soludo, leading to the activation of a state task force that tackled the immediate challenge of waste blockages.

According to him, the intervention resulted in the gradual removal of refuse mountains that had posed environmental and health concerns for years.

Chief Ozoemena explained that ASWAMA has moved from emergency clearance to a broader restructuring of the waste management system.

He stressed that the decentralisation of responsibilities now allows local government councils to oversee waste collection within their areas, while ASWAMA focuses on coordination, policy formulation, enforcement, and dumpsite management.

The ASWAMA boss said field officers currently submit daily situation reports from all twenty-one local government areas, enabling the agency to respond quickly to emerging waste issues.

He added that the improved monitoring system has led to more consistent evacuation services, especially in densely populated locations.

Chief Ozoemena identified low public compliance with the “pay direct” funding model as a major challenge, noting that many residents still fail to pay for waste services despite rising operational costs borne by contractors.
