Nigeria Plunged into Darkness Again as Power Grid Crashes for Second Time in Four Days

Electricity grid buckled for the third time in under a month on Tuesday, plummeting power generation to a scant 39 megawatts and triggering widespread outages, utility officials said, as the recurring failures deepen woes for Africa’s biggest economy reliant on erratic supplies.

The latest blackout struck at 10:48 am, erasing output from a morning peak of 4,762 megawatts and leaving distribution firms with zero allocations, according to real-time data and company alerts.

It marks the second collapse in four days, following a similar plunge on January 23 and another on December 29, 2025, with no immediate cause disclosed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

Eko Electricity Distribution Company, serving parts of Lagos, confirmed the disruption in a customer notice.

“Kindly be informed that there was a system collapse at 10:48 hrs, which has resulted to a loss of power supply across our network,” the firm stated. “We are currently working with our TCN partners as we hope for the speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as power supply is restored. Kindly bear with us.”

The Nigerian Independent System Operator described the prior January 23 incident as a “system-wide disturbance” at around 12:40 pm that caused a “total outage across the interconnected network,” but has yet to comment on Tuesday’s event.
