Broadcaster Daddy Freeze on Wednesday rallied behind young streamer Peller amid backlash urging him to ditch online fame for academics, pointing to American YouTuber IShowSpeed’s hefty monthly paycheck as proof of the sector’s viability.
Freeze challenged detractors in a social media clip, questioning why Peller should abandon a potentially lucrative path when global influencers reap massive rewards.
“IShowSpeed just complained that YouTube only pays him $800,000 a month. That’s 1.2 billion naira a month and the money is too small for the amount of work he’s putting in,” he said.
“And you say make Peller leave wetin he dey do, make he come join you for school?”
The media figure, known for his outspoken takes, drew comparisons to diaspora Nigerians’ incomes to underscore the disparity. “Do you make $100,000 a year? You in Canada, America and the UK, some of you don’t even make $200,000 a year,” Freeze added. “See the kind of figures these boys are calling.”
The debate ignited after IShowSpeed’s recent African tour stop in Nigeria to mark his 21st birthday, during which Peller — a rising TikTok and streaming sensation — was reportedly barred from meeting him by security. Critics argue formal education offers structure and longevity, while supporters like Freeze contend that compulsory schooling ends at secondary level, and digital creators thrive without advanced degrees.
