African champions Nigeria cruised to a commanding 70-37 victory over Colombia in their opening match of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifiers at the Astroballe Arena on Wednesday.
The eighth-ranked D’Tigress, already assured of a place at the global finals, produced a dominant second-half display to overwhelm their 19th-ranked opponents in the teams’ first-ever encounter.
Nigeria edged the first quarter 18-12 but faced stiff resistance in the second period before taking a 34-29 lead into half-time. Coach Rena Wakama’s side then imposed total control after the break, restricting Colombia to just five points in the third quarter and three in the fourth while adding 36 of their own.
Victoria Macaulay led the scoring with 13 points and six rebounds in only 14 minutes, earning Player of the Match honours. Nicole Enabosi posted a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Ifunnaya Okoro chipped in with 10 points.
The Nigerians shot 40.6 percent from the field, outrebounded Colombia 51-31 and dished out 23 assists, showcasing superior teamwork and defensive intensity.
D’Tigress social media celebrated Macaulay’s performance with the message: “All hail the Queen, Victoria Macaulay.”
Nigeria’s 70–37 win over Colombia was Coach Rena Wakama’s 14th victory since her appointment in 2023. Since becoming D’Tigress’ coach, she has managed 18 competitive matches, winning 14 and losing 4.
Nigeria will now prepare for their next Group D fixture against South Korea on Thursday as they seek to build momentum ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
