Otti Pushes for Abia’s Exit from National Grid with Private Power Project

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has announced plans to disconnect the entire state from Nigeria’s national electricity grid, backing a private-sector initiative to secure reliable independent power supply.

Otti made the disclosure while outlining the administration’s energy strategy, saying negotiations were already under way abroad.

“My main target is to remove the entire Abia from the National grid. My Hon. Commissioner for Power is in the Netherlands negotiating for this. Even though it’s a private enterprise, we are ready to support it because it will benefit us all,” he said.

The governor noted that the move, if successful, would position Abia among the first states to significantly reduce dependence on the national grid, which has been widely criticised for persistent outages and inefficiency.

No specific timeline or details of the proposed project were released.
