Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has completed a permanent transfer to newly promoted Premier League side Coventry City, triggered automatically by the club’s successful return to the top flight.
The move, finalised on Monday, follows Onyeka’s loan spell from Brentford that began in January 2026 and included a promotion clause. Coventry confirmed the deal as their first signing since securing promotion under manager Frank Lampard.
Onyeka, 27, featured in 12 matches for the Sky Blues during the second half of the Championship season, primarily deployed as a defensive midfielder. His performances were noted for providing energy, discipline and physical presence in the engine room, helping the team maintain balance in midfield transitions during the promotion run-in.
The Nigeria international joined Brentford from Danish club FC Midtjylland in 2021 and made nearly 90 appearances for the Bees before the loan to Coventry. He also had a previous loan spell in Germany with FC Augsburg.
Coventry’s decision to convert the loan into a permanent contract underscores the club’s strategy to retain key contributors from their promotion-winning campaign and build squad stability ahead of the rigours of Premier League football.
Onyeka’s experience in English football and his ability to adapt to different tactical demands are expected to prove valuable as Coventry prepare for life back in the top division after years away.
No financial details of the permanent deal were disclosed. The signing marks an important early step in Coventry’s recruitment drive as they look to strengthen their midfield for the upcoming 2026/27 Premier League season.
