U.S. First Lady Melania Trump has called on ABC News to penalize late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, describing his recent televised joke about her as “disrespectful and inflammatory.”
The controversy erupted after Kimmel, during a monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, referred to Mrs. Trump as an “expectant widow” while discussing the ongoing legal challenges and age of her husband, President Donald Trump.
In a sharply worded statement released via her office on Monday, Mrs. Trump accused the network of allowing “toxic vitriol” to pass as entertainment. She argued that the comment crossed a line from political satire into personal malice.
”The comment made by Mr. Kimmel was not only offensive but also a malicious attack on my character and my marriage,” the statement read. “ABC must hold their employees to a standard of decency and take immediate action to sanction such hateful rhetoric.”
The former First Lady’s legal team reportedly sent a formal letter to Disney-owned ABC, suggesting that failure to address the matter would demonstrate a “clear bias” and a “hostile broadcasting environment.”
Kimmel, known for his frequent and vocal criticism of the Trump family, has not yet issued a formal apology. During a subsequent broadcast, the comedian briefly addressed the backlash, maintaining that his show is a “space for parody and political commentary.”
”It’s a comedy show, not a deposition,” Kimmel told his audience, though he stopped short of repeating the specific phrase that sparked the outcry.
The incident has reignited a debate over the boundaries of late-night comedy in an increasingly polarized American political landscape. Supporters of Mrs. Trump have taken to social media to call for a boycott of the network, while defenders of the comedian cite the First Amendment and the tradition of biting political satire.
”This is about more than just a joke,” a spokesperson for the former First Lady added. “It is about the relentless bullying of a private citizen by a major media corporation under the guise of humor.”
