# Anambra State Firstlady Dr. Mrs. Nonye Soludo, on Thursday, distributed 25,000 packs of sanitary pads to schoolgirls in Anambra rural communities to promote menstrual health.

The distribution took place at the banquet hall, light house, Awka, during this year 2026 World Menstrual Hygiene Day celebration.

In her speech, the wife Governor Chukwuma Soludo said the free distribution of the pads was part of her Healthy Living With Nonye Initiative, aimed at “enhancing the dignity and confidence of schoolgirls, particularly those from underserved communities.

“As we celebrate this year’s Menstrual Hygiene Day, I stand before you not just as a mother, a woman, or the wife of the Governor of Anambra State, but as an advocate for dignity, health, confidence, and the future of our children, especially girls.

“Menstruation is a natural part of life. It is not a curse. It is not a taboo. It is not something any girl should be ashamed of. Yet, across many communities, countless girls still suffer in silence because of stigma, poor hygiene education, lack of sanitary materials, and harmful cultural and social misconceptions. Some are isolated, mocked, restricted from certain activities, or made to feel unclean and inferior during their menstrual cycle. This should never be so”. Soludo stated.

 

# The Managing Director of the Anambra State Anti-Touting Squad (SASA), Mr. Monday Nwokoye, has clarified the trending online video involving one of their officers who was accused of stealing from an alleged drug baron in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.

Mr. Nwokoye, who confirmed the video as authentic, noted that the incident happened in 2025 and that the officer involved was immediately dismissed after receiving adequate punishment.

The SASA boss explained that the dismissed officer was among the team members who carried out the operation in Oba and arrested a woman accused of selling drugs, but the woman later complained that her money was missing after the arrest.

He further disclosed that the leader of the operation, who is a native of Nando in Anambra East Local Government Area, took everyone involved in the operation for interrogation, and the outcome revealed that the said officer was the culprit, after which he was punished and dismissed.

Mr. Nwokoye made it clear that the video is an old one, adding that Governor Chukwuma Soludo has zero tolerance for touting and stealing across the state, while appreciating Ndi Anambra for their continued support.

# A non-governmental organization “In Our Mind Foundation” founded by Angel Onuko-Nmoh, a United Kingdom-based nurse, has offset the school fees of seven less privileged pupils at Akwunweke Digbo Community Primary School, Otolo, Nnewi, Anambra State.

The foundation also donated school bags, shoes, books, and other writing and educational materials to the pupils of the school as part of its activities to commemorate the 2026 Children’s Day celebration.

Speaking before the distribution of the materials, the Team Lead of the foundation in Anambra State, Engr. Ikechukwu Onuko, promised that more pupils of the school would benefit from the school fees initiative and stated that the project is part of the foundation’s kiddies’ outreach programme, which is targeted at increasing access to quality education and lessening the burden on parents and guardians.

The Team Lead added that apart from reaching out to children, the foundation has intervened to rescue women from abusive marriages, empower young people, and positively impact the lives of the less privileged.

Appreciating the foundation, the Headmistress of Akwunweke Digbo Community Primary School, Nnewi, Mrs. Justina Ogbonna, said it was her happiest day as the head teacher of the school, noting that many of her pupils previously lacked basic writing materials.

# The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Anambra State Command, has convened a strategic meeting with the Association of Licensed Private Security Practitioners of Nigeria, ALPSPN, Anambra Chapter, and issued a stern warning that unlicensed private security companies will be rounded up without hesitation.

The meeting, held at the State Command Headquarters in Awka was aimed at addressing persistent operational lapses, regulatory non-compliance, and unprofessional conduct by some unregistered private security outfits operating in the state.

Addressing participants at the meeting, Commandant Maku Olatunde, the NSCDC Anambra State Commandant said that amid the country’s current security challenges, private security practitioners play a vital role in Nigeria’s security framework.

The NSCDC boss stated that the NSCDC’s statutory responsibility covers the registration, licensing, training, regulation, and supervision of Private Guard Companies nationwide, and vowed to enforce professional standards without compromise.

Commandant Maku Olatunde, while commending the leadership and members of ALPSPN Anambra Chapter for their dedication to strengthening private security operations within the state, warned that the Command remains firm in upholding its supervisory mandate.

 

# The Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State has appointed Dr. Okafor Ifeanyi Fidelis as the Director of Medical Services of the institution for a single tenure of five (5) years, in accordance with established regulations.

Dr. Okafor, a distinguished medical practitioner and experienced General Surgeon, brings to the office a wealth of professional experience spanning over fourteen years across tertiary, secondary, and primary healthcare systems.

Okafor, an Alumni of University of Benin, a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) and Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCS England), also holds a Master of Science degree in Human Anatomy from Ahmadu Bello University. He is equally certified in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) by the American College of Surgeons.

Before his appointment, Dr. Okafor served in several strategic clinical and administrative capacities at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, where he demonstrated strong leadership in surgical services, clinical governance, patient safety, and healthcare quality improvement.

His appointment is expected to further strengthen healthcare delivery and medical services within the polytechnic community, leveraging his extensive expertise in hospital administration, multidisciplinary coordination, and strategic healthcare management.

The appointment followed strict adherence to due process, in line with the officially advertised position and a transparent, merit-based interview process conducted by the Governing Council of the institution led by Senator Engr. Dr. Barnabas Gemade.

 

# In commemoration of the 2026 International Children’s Day, members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Anambra State Chapter, celebrated the day with children of Tenderlove Home in Awka.

Members of the NAWOJ Anambra State Chapter, led by their Chairperson, Comrade Tochukwu Ifejika, paid a charity visit to the home with items such as diapers, wipes, noodles, biscuits, detergent, toilet rolls, yoghurt, bathing soaps, cooked food, drinks, among others.

In her message to the inmates of the home, Comrade Ifejika expressed happiness in celebrating the day with the children, thanked God for life, and told the children that they are the future of tomorrow, even as she prayed for the children, as well as the management and staff of the orphanage, for God’s continual blessings upon them.

Responding on behalf of the Tenderlove management, the proprietress, Mrs. Helen Eze, deeply appreciated NAWOJ for the gesture and revealed that running the orphanage, especially in the present economic situation in Nigeria, is not easy and not something a single individual can do alone, saying that it requires collective effort from the government and well-meaning individuals.

The presentation of gift items to the children, cake-cutting, group photographs, eating, and drinking with the children made the visit a memorable experience.

# For the students and staff of the prestigious Uniniger Umunya, it was a day of indescribable joy as renowned philanthropist and socialite, Chief Dr. Obinna Iyiegbu popularly know as Obi Cubana, together with his brother Hon. Ikenna Iyiegbu (Ike Cubana), made their first visit to the institution. Their purpose was to witness firsthand the remarkable level of development taking place across the university.

The distinguished guests were warmly received by the Chancellor, The Rt. Rev. Dr. Owen Chiedozie Nwokolo(JP, FITH-PUA), who personally guided them through key departments, including the ongoing infrastructure projects and medical facilities at University on the Niger Teaching Hospital, Iyi-Enu. They also went to the permanent site campus in Umunya, where they were warmly received by the students. They also visited the Law Faculty’s moot court, where the law students were having a court sitting during their LAWSA week.

Impressed by the quality of infrastructure and state-of-the-art equipment, Obi Cubana commended the Bishop for remaining faithful to the university’s founding vision. He also expressed deep appreciation to the staff for their dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to academic excellence. In a generous gesture, the visitor made a substantial donation towards student welfare.

In response, Bishop Nwokolo thanked them for their visit and heartfelt support for the students. He prayed that God would continue to strengthen them, prosper their endeavors, and cause His face to forever shine upon them.

# The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Esther Onyekesi says Anambra State Government will strengthen child protection by setting up functional desks in every local government area, training social workers, and working with traditional rulers and presidents-general.

Hon. Onyekesi, who stated this during the 2026 Children’s Day celebration at the Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, also maintained that the Ministry will partner with the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board to continue reducing the number of out-of-school children, especially among the girl child.

The Commissioner said the Ministry will also synergize with non-governmental organizations to provide scholarships for deserving children.

According to her, the government will support mothers and caregivers through skill acquisition programmes and microgrants to stabilize families and ensure that children are safe in their various schools and colleges.

Commissioner Onyekesi, who decried the negative impacts of social media on children, urged them to always internalize the positive aspects of social media in order to become useful citizens. She called on couples to see the development and upbringing of their children as a collective responsibility.

Onyekesi commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his wife, Nonye, for all their programmes and policies aimed at improving the lives of women and children, and called on Ndị Anambra to continue supporting and praying for the Soludo administration, which she said has a clear vision and mission for the people of the state.

# The administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo has intensified efforts aimed at protecting children, combating trafficking, and strengthening child welfare systems in line with the ideals of International Missing Children’s Day.
One of the major initiatives of the Anambra State Government is the strengthening of child protection and alternative care systems through the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare.

Recently, the state inaugurated a Technical Working Group on Alternative Care for Children in collaboration with child protection organisations and SOS Children’s Villages to improve policies relating to child safety and welfare.

The government also adopted guidelines designed to ensure safer care arrangements for vulnerable children. The measures include compulsory training for caregivers, background checks, improved monitoring systems, and stricter adoption procedures aimed at preventing abuse, trafficking, and the disappearance of children.

In efforts to tackle child trafficking and abduction, the state government has continued to support security operations involving the police and other law enforcement agencies. Security operatives in the state recently rescued missing children and dismantled trafficking networks operating within and outside Anambra State.

# The Anambra State Boundary Committee (ASBC) has intensified efforts to resolve the lingering boundary dispute between Ovolo and Akabo communities in Mbaukwu and Ifiteani Agulu through a field verification exercise conducted at the disputed area on Wednesday.

The exercise, held at the Pre-Science Study Centre, Mbaukwu, commenced at about 11 a.m., with representatives and chairmen of the affected communities arriving promptly at the agreed convergence point.

The ASBC field team was led by the representative of the Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Committee, Dr. OnyekaChukwu Ibezim, Hon. Okoye Bethel Ekenechukwu Okoye.

Addressing stakeholders before the commencement of the exercise, the team leader reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and fair resolution of the dispute through dialogue and due process.

During the exercise, Ifiteani Agulu community first identified and presented its claimed boundary line, followed by separate presentations by Ovolo and Akabo Mbaukwu communities. Mr. Ikechukwu Ikeji represented Ifiteani Agulu, while Mr. Peter Ikechukwu Ezeh spoke for Mbaukwu in identifying their respective boundary claims.

The ASBC technical team subsequently captured and documented all coordinate points presented by the parties for further analysis and plotting.

Speaking after the exercise, representatives of the communities expressed appreciation to the Anambra State Government and the Deputy Governor, Dr. OnyekaChukwu Ibezim, for the commitment towards restoring peace and ensuring an amicable settlement of the dispute. They also pledged continued cooperation with the Anambra State Boundary Committee throughout the resolution process.
