Anambra Assembly Urges Soludo To Establish Fire Service Stations

Anambra House of Assembly has called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to establish comprehensive fire service stations and ensure the training of personnel across the 21 Local Government Areas of the state to tackle the increasing cases of fire outbreaks.

The 8th Assembly at plenary on Thursday,
directed the Commissioner for Power and Water Resources to urgently establish Fire Service Points, deploy firefighting equipment, and initiate rigorous personnel training across all 21 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Anambra State.

The lawmaker representing Idemili South Constituency, Barrister Ebuka Igwe, who sponsored the motion noted that Anambra State has continued to witness recurrent fire incidents, including recent midnight outbreaks in markets and communities, which destroyed shops, buildings, and properties worth millions of naira.

Hon. Igwe stressed that effective fire prevention and rapid emergency response depend on the availability of modern firefighting equipment, trained personnel, functional fire stations, and the strategic deployment of resources across both urban and rural communities.

The lawmaker expressed concern that the existing firefighting facilities and operational capacity of Anambra fire service may be inadequate to effectively cover all parts of the state, especially remote and densely populated areas where response times are often delayed.

According to Igwe, the proactive establishment of fire service stations or response points in all 21 Local Government Areas, alongside adequate training of personnel and the provision of firefighting equipment, would reduce the loss of lives and property during fire disasters.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, who presided plenary, commended the sponsor of the motion, describing it as commendable and beneficial to the people of Anambra State.

Describing the legislative intervention as both apt and highly timely, Udeze challenged other lawmakers to sponsor similarly impactful, people-centric Motions.

Speaking in support of the motion, Patrick Udoba (Anambra West), Nonso Atuchukwu (Nnewi South One), Golden Iloh (Ihiala Two), Mimi Azikiwe (Onitsha North One), Augustine Ike (Nnewi North),
Hon. Patrick Okafor (Onitsha North two), in their separate submissions, called for improved emergency preparedness and the protection of lives and property in Anambra State.

The lawmakers expressed deep worry over recent midnight outbreaks in Awka that destroyed shops, buildings, and properties worth millions of naira, alongside rampant bushfires and blazes ravaging rural communities.

Debating the Motion, the lawmakers pointed out that this centralized model leaves a massive safety vacuum.

They argued that relying on distant urban hubs drastically inflates emergency response times, rendering firefighters helpless by the time they traverse difficult terrain to reach distant Local Governments.

By establishing dedicated response points in every single LGA, neighboring stations can provide rapid tactical support and back each other up during large-scale industrial or market blazes. The lawmakers noted.

They maintained that remote and densely populated local government areas face disproportionate risks due to dense market clusters, rural industrial activities, and fragile electrical/power-related hazards. Centralized equipment at the Awka headquarters simply cannot protect these zones effectively.

Angel Network News (ANN) reports that
the House adjourned till Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
