England overcame a red card and a spirited fightback from hosts Mexico to win 3-2 in a dramatic round-of-16 clash at Estadio Azteca on Sunday.
Jude Bellingham scored twice early in the first half to put England in control, before Julian Quinones pulled one back for Mexico. Harry Kane added a penalty to make it 3-1, but Raul Jimenez responded from the spot late on. England were reduced to 10 men after Jarell Quansah’s red card.
The high-scoring affair featured multiple yellow cards, a weather delay earlier, and intense atmosphere at the iconic venue. England coach Thomas Tuchel had described the match as “an iconic match and a big stage.”
Mexico, who had kept clean sheets through their opening matches, showed resilience but ultimately fell short against the European side. England advance to the quarter-finals.
