# Anambra State Government has resolved to intensify efforts towards environmental protection, road safety, and improved public order as part of deepen good governance.
These are parts of the decisions taken at this week’s meeting of the State Executive Council at the Light House, Awka.
Briefing newsmen after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, disclosed that the Council approved stiffer penalties for traffic offences.
According to him, the government will approach the Anambra State House of Assembly to amend the extant traffic law in state.
He said offences such as driving against oncoming traffic and cutting across dual carriageways to beat U-turn distances will now attract very heavy fines and mandatory Mental Status Examination..
Dr. Mefor explained that the measure is aimed at curbing recklessness and safeguarding lives on the state’s roads.
# The Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Infrastructure has focused attention on ensuring that the exact circumference of the Oko Roundabout conforms to the approved engineering design, as it inspected the ongoing dual carriageway project from Oko to Ufuma in Orumba North Local Government Area during an oversight visit.
The Committee, led by Engr. Emmanuel Nwafor, who also represents Orumba South Constituency, described the roundabout as a vital component of the road project, and stressed that every measurement must align with the approved specifications to guarantee safety, durability, and efficient traffic flow.
The lawmaker expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work on the dual carriageway, noting that the project is progressing steadily in line with the State Government’s commitment to providing modern road infrastructure.
Responding, the contractor assured the Committee that the Oko Roundabout and every other component of the project are being executed strictly in accordance with the approved engineering design and standards.
The contractor further disclosed that work is on schedule and promised to complete the project within the next six months, barring any unforeseen challenges.
# The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Sector Command, has urged motorists to exercise greater caution and strictly observe road safety measures as the rainy season intensifies and heavier rainfall is expected across the country.
The Anambra State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhanuo, said driving during rainfall poses significant risks due to poor visibility, slippery road surfaces, and other hazardous conditions that could lead to road traffic crashes if adequate precautions are not taken.
She advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey. According to her, drivers should clean their vehicle windows and windshields thoroughly, both inside and outside, and inspect essential safety components, including headlights, brake lights, tail lights, turn signals, windscreen wipers, and wiper blades, to ensure they are functioning properly.
Corps Commander Asekhanuo further stressed that vehicle lights should always be switched on whenever it rains, regardless of whether it is daytime or nighttime, to improve visibility for all road users.
She also urged motorists to reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, and apply what she described as the “common sense speed limit” based on prevailing weather and road conditions.
Highlighting the importance of tyre safety, the Sector Commander noted that tyres are the only points of contact between a vehicle and the road. She therefore advised drivers to ensure their tyres have adequate tread depth and proper traction to maintain a firm grip on wet road surfaces.
To strengthen compliance with the safety measures, Asekhanuo directed all Unit Commanders across Anambra State to intensify traffic calming operations, sustain public enlightenment campaigns, and pay particular attention to the condition of vehicle windscreen wipers during routine patrols and enforcement activities throughout the rainy season.
She reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to reducing road traffic crashes and called on all road users to cooperate with the Corps by driving responsibly and obeying traffic regulations.
“Drive to Stay Alive,” she emphasized.
# The Anambra State Ministry of Health has commenced data collection for the Mid-Term Review of the Health Sector Strategic Blueprint as part of efforts to assess progress in implementing key health interventions, identify existing challenges and strengthen healthcare delivery across the state.
The exercise, which began at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Awka, is reviewing the implementation of the 2023–2027 Health Sector Strategic Blueprint to provide evidence for policy decisions and improved health outcomes.
Speaking at the meeting, the Anambra facilitator for the Mid-Term Review data collection process, Dr. Dozie Nwokedi, described the strategic blueprint as a medium-term development framework that guides health sector planning and implementation at the federal, state and local government levels.
Dr. Nwokedi explained that the blueprint provides the framework through which ministries, departments and agencies develop programmes, projects and activities aimed at improving healthcare delivery.
He noted that the blueprint is anchored on four strategic pillars, supported by three enablers, 18 objectives, 27 priority initiatives and 265 interventions designed to improve Nigeria’s health sector between 2023 and 2027.
According to him, the Mid-Term Review will assess the progress made so far and identify challenges affecting the implementation of critical health interventions.
# Diocese on the Niger, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion has added thirty (30) new priests in its vineyard.
The ordination service at All Saints’ Cathedral, Onitsha was performed by the Bishop on the Niger and Dean of All Saints’ Cathedral, Onitsha, Rt. Rev. Dr. Owen Chiedozie Nwokolo.
Bishop Nwokolo prayed for God’s abundant grace upon the newly ordained priests, asking that they would remain faithful, and steadfast in their ministry.
He also invoked God’s blessings upon the congregation, praying that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit would continue to guide, protect, and strengthen all believers in their walk of faith.
Speaking during the retreat preceding the ordination, Ven. Emmanuel Ezeugo urged the newly ordained priests to remain steadfast in their divine calling by relying completely on God’s grace and resisting the works of the flesh, principalities, and every form of darkness.
# Five organisations and individuals have been honoured by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Anambra State with the 2026 Outstanding Corps Employers Awards in recognition of their exceptional commitment to the welfare, mentorship and professional development of corps members.
The awards were presented during the 2026 NYSC Corps Employers Workshop held in Awka. The workshop, themed “Fine tuning Stakeholders’ Collaboration to Enhance Corps Members’ Welfare and Workplace Experience,” was jointly organised by the NYSC South East Area Office I, Enugu and the NYSC Anambra State Secretariat.
Among the recipients, Chairman of Marston De Rock Ltd, Martin Ezeorji, received the Most Supportive Partner Award, while HRM Igwe Sir Benneth Emeka (Oke Ebo II of Umueri), Chairman of Chiben Beverages Ltd, was honoured as the Most Outstanding Corps Employer. # The Faculty of Law Students’ Association (LAWSA) of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University has established an Environmental Sustainability Committee to drive the institution’s “Pick It… Don’t Litter” campaign within the Faculty of Law.
The committee was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor, Kate Omenugha, during the 23rd Annual LAWSA Dinner held at the Hollywood Event Centre.
Speaking at the event, Omenugha described the initiative as a demonstration of leadership and collective responsibility, expressing confidence that it would strengthen environmental consciousness and encourage responsible waste disposal among students.
She said the annual Law Dinner remains an integral part of legal education, exposing students to the etiquette, ethics and professional conduct expected of legal practitioners, while urging them to uphold discipline, integrity and excellence throughout their careers.
The Vice-Chancellor reiterated the university’s zero tolerance policy on examination malpractice, environmental abuse and other forms of misconduct, warning that any student found guilty of littering the campus would face a one year suspension in line with Senate approved regulations.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of a portrait bearing the inscription, “Pick It… Don’t Litter; Noli Sordes Facere,” by LAWSA President, Comrade Chukwuemeka Okeke, in recognition of Omenugha’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Omenugha commended the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Okorie, the LAWSA executive and the organizing committee for supporting the initiative.
She expressed confidence that the newly inaugurated committee would deepen environmental responsibility within the faculty and further advance the university’s guiding philosophy of Values, Viability and Visibility (3Vs).
# The Ide Gabriel Ezekwo Foundation has donated 1,000 copies of an inspirational book titled In His Days to the Anambra State Post Primary Schools Service Commission (PPSSC) to promote moral values among secondary school students.
Presenting the books at the PPSSC headquarters in Awka, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, Chief Samuel Ezekwo, represented by the Foundation’s Coordinator, Chief Cosmas Nwafor, said the publication is designed to instill discipline, hard work and positive values in young people.
Chief Nwafor encouraged schools to promote the book through reading sessions, quizzes and debates, noting that such activities would reinforce the culture of hard work and community service championed by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, particularly in addressing the growing menace of Oke Ite practices and fake pastors.
Receiving the donation, the Secretary of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission, Mrs. Bernadine Anago, described the book’s message as timely and relevant to the moral challenges facing society.
She directed Zonal Directors to ensure the books are distributed to school principals, who will oversee their effective use by students to achieve the intended impact.
Mrs. Anago expressed appreciation to Chief Ezekwo for his sustained commitment to education and philanthropy, highlighting his support for Government Technical College (GTC), Umuchu, and the wider educational sector in Anambra State.
# The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) Communicators’ Conference for Diocesan Media and Communication Directors, Public Relations Officers and Database Officers have ended with a communique, calling on communicators to effectively harness digital technology, social media, artificial intelligence, as well as other emerging platforms for the advancement of the Gospel.
The Communicators were also encouraged to be active in their engagement rather than passive observation in fulfilling their ministry.
The Communique was signed by The Rev’d Canon Matthew Adesanmi Adeyeba, Chairman, Communique Drafting Committee; The Ven. Raphael Adedoyin Aderinwale, Director of Communicator, Church of Nigeria and Ven. Dr. Festus Opara, General Secretary, Church of Nigeria.
The conference ended at the Diocesan Church Center Onitsha, Anambra State as hosted by the Diocese on the Niger under the seer of Bishop on the Niger, Right Reverend Dr Owen Nwokolo with theme: “The Watchman’s Trumpet: The future of the Great Commission.” (Ezekiel 33:7).
According to the Communique, His Grace, the Most Rev’d Dr. Henry Chukwudum Ndukuba, DD, Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate of The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), was represented by the Most Rev’d Dr. Blessing C. Enyindah, the Dean Church of Nigeria, who also performed the formal opening ceremony.
# # The Chaplain Corps Policing Explorers (CHAPOL), Anambra State Command, led by the State Commandant, Mr. Joseph Ekwunife, paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, at her office.
During the visit, the Commandant commended the Commissioner for her commitment to the welfare of women and children across the state, and sought her continued support and collaboration in advancing the Corps’ community policing and youth development initiatives.
Mrs. Onyekesi, in her response, appreciated CHAPOL for the visit and reaffirmed the Ministry’s readiness to partner with security and para-military organisations in promoting the safety and wellbeing of women and children in Anambra State.
