Ronaldinho Returns to Pro Football at 46 With Italian Side

Brazilian football icon Ronaldinho has arrived in Italy to begin an improbable return to professional football at the age of 46, joining Serie C club Ravenna.

The former Ballon d’Or winner landed at Forlì Airport in Emilia-Romagna on Thursday ahead of his formal unveiling and a series of events marking the start of the new season. Ravenna confirmed his arrival by posting images on its social media platforms.

Ronaldinho announced his comeback in June and is expected to appear in at least one official match for the club, though no date has been set for his competitive debut.

The move is driven largely by commercial and international ambitions. Ravenna, acquired in 2024 by Italian businessman Ignazio Cipriani, views the arrival of one of football’s most recognisable figures as a chance to boost its profile and commercial appeal. Cipriani, whose family owns the Cipriani restaurant group, maintains a close relationship with the Brazilian star.

Before travelling to Emilia-Romagna, Ronaldinho stopped in Milan, where he once played for two-and-a-half seasons, and met former Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, sharing the encounter on social media.

At his official presentation in Miami nearly two months ago, Ronaldinho explained his motivation. “Football has always been joy for me, and I am excited to bring that spirit to Ravenna. Let the magic begin!” he said.

The return adds a new chapter to a career that includes a World Cup title, Champions League success and the Ballon d’Or, while giving Ravenna unusual global visibility in Italy’s third tier.
