Major League Soccer has fined Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi an undisclosed amount for putting his hands to the face, head or neck of an opponent.
The disciplinary committee announced the sanction after the incident in the 101st minute of Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw with Philadelphia Union on Wednesday in Chester.
Messi’s teammate, defender Ian Fray, was also fined for the same violation of league policy.
Tempers flared deep in second-half stoppage time, resulting in red cards for Miami’s Yannick Bright and Philadelphia’s Cavan Sullivan.
An independent review panel later unanimously rescinded Sullivan’s one-game suspension and fine for the red card issued in the 102nd minute. The panel included representatives from US Soccer, Canada Soccer and the Professional Referee Organization.
Sullivan is now eligible to play for the Union in their next match against Austin FC.
