# Civil Society Organisations and Media Practitioners in Anambra State have called for greater public access to government procurement information, saying citizens must be able to scrutinise how public contracts are awarded and implemented.
The groups also want stronger institutional controls around public procurement, including the effective operation of the Council on Public Procurement and improved enforcement by the state Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP).
Their position was contained in a communiqué issued after a public procurement capacity-building programme organised under the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC II) Programme, with the support of International IDEA.
The training, held in Awka, brought together members of the CSOs/Media Accountability and Anti-Corruption Initiative, who examined the procurement process, regulatory responsibilities, approval thresholds and mechanisms for citizen oversight.
At the centre of their resolutions was a demand for the Anambra State Government to make procurement information readily available to the public.
# The Old Girls Association of Union Secondary School, Obosi, have visited the Ugamuma erosion site to express solidarity with Engr. Eric Anyamene and appreciate his swift response to the erosion crisis.
Union Secondary School, popularly known as Obosi Girls, is close to the affected area and is also exposed to the threat posed by the advancing erosion. The visit gave the Old Girls an opportunity to see the situation firsthand and assess the remedial work already underway.
The delegation commended Anyamene for mobilising engineers and resources immediately after the incident, noting that his intervention came at a critical time when residents and the school community were facing serious concerns over their safety.
They particularly appreciated his personal involvement and continued attention to the site, stressing the importance of acting quickly to prevent further damage.
# The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Anambra State Command has rolled out strategic security measures to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free Eid-El Maulid, celebration across the state, scheduled to hold on Tuesday, 25th August 2026.
In a statement issued by the NSCDC Anambra State spokesman, SC. Okadigbo Edwin, the Corps in line with an operational order released for the assignment, Commandant Maku Olatunde, the State Commandant, stated that the Corps will perform its core mandate of safeguarding lives and property during the festive period with the deployment of 750 personnel.
He noted that the celebration, which honours the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), calls for unity, tolerance, and mutual respect among all Nigerians.
To this end and upon the directives of the State Commandant, Area Commanders and their respective Divisional Officers have been tasked with the robust deployment of personnel and resources to Critical National Assets and Infrastructure , including places of worship, markets , motor parks, major junctions, recreational centres and other public gathering points to forestall any act of criminality most importantly vandalism.
The Special Female Squad, Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), Agro Rangers Unit, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives Unit (CBRNE) have also been placed on red alert to respond swiftly to any security threat.
# The International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Anambra State Chapter, has called for greater protection of men, women and children involved in family disputes, particularly victims of domestic violence, inheritance-related abuses and discrimination against female children and widows.
The Chairperson of FIDA, Anambra State Chapter, Barrister Amara Muojeke, made the call during the Special Congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, ABS Chapel, held at the Film Academy, Headquarters, Awka.
Barrister Muojeke said domestic violence should not be regarded as a problem perpetrated only by men, noting that women can also subject their husbands to physical and emotional abuse.
She cited a case involving a woman who allegedly became the breadwinner of her family after her husband encountered difficulties in his business, but later subjected him to maltreatment.
The FIDA Chairperson stressed that domestic violence should be addressed without prejudice, irrespective of the gender of the victim or perpetrator.
On inheritance, Barrister Muojeke expressed concern over cases where female children are allegedly denied their fathers’ property following their deaths simply because they are girls.
She maintained that female children are equal members of their families and should not be discriminated against in matters of inheritance on the basis of gender.
Barrister Muojeke also drew attention to the plight of widows, who, she said, are sometimes subjected to discrimination and denied access to property belonging to their deceased husbands.
She urged members of the public to speak out against domestic violence, discrimination and other forms of abuse, warning that silence could allow such practices to persist.
Barrister Muojeke further highlighted the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, SGBV, Unit established by the Anambra State Government under the Ministry of Justice to strengthen intervention and response to gender-based violence.
She called for increased public awareness and responsible intervention in cases of abuse, stressing the need for collective action to protect vulnerable members of society.
# Governor Chukwuma Soludo, has formally endorsed the candidacy of Anambra Football Association (ANSFA) Chairman, Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, for the South-East seat on the Nigeria Football Federation, (NFF), Executive Committee.
Professor Soludo announced the endorsement in Awka during a meeting with Iloenyosi, saying the state government was throwing its full weight behind the former Super Eagles defender.
The Governor described Iloenyosi as the right candidate to protect and promote the interests of the South-East at the highest level of football administration in Nigeria.
The Governor stressed that the zone requires stronger representation within the NFF to ensure its talents and structures receive adequate attention.
Highlighting Iloenyosi’s credentials, Prof. Soludo noted that the candidate brings a rare combination of playing experience at the highest level and grassroots administrative experience.
Soludo said the endorsement goes beyond supporting an individual, but is about advancing the collective interest of Anambra and the wider South-East region.
The Governor further assured the candidate of institutional backing throughout the election process.
# The Anambra State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Architect Okey Ezeobi, says government infrastructure must reflect the vision of the state to become a prosperous, livable and smart mega city.
Ezeobi said the ongoing transformation of the Works and Infrastructure Ministry’s environment was designed to demonstrate what the administration means when it talks about creating a better standard of living and working in Anambra.
He described the facility as a work in progress, noting that the present appearance is only part of a larger transformation he intends to achieve.
According to him, the goal is to create an environment that compares favourably with the standards found in leading multinational organisations.
The Commissioner said this approach is driven by a personal philosophy of leaving every environment better than he met it and creating an impact that can endure beyond his tenure.
He believes that leadership should be measured not only by policies announced but by visible changes that improve the environment and the lives of the people working in it.
# The I.G Aguowo Health and Academic Foundation has held its 6th Education Summit and Induction of its graduated beneficiaries into “IGAHAF Global Network Of Alumni” in Awka, the Anambra State Capital.
Speaking during the event that drew men and women from all walks of life, the founder and Chainman Board of Trustees of the foundation, Ozo Ignatius Onyeka Aguowo who noted that the foundation was birthed six years ago, made it clear that it is set out to close the education gap, alleviate poverty through education, and provide a platform where academic dreams could thrive, adding that currently, the foundation provides comprehensive academic sponsorship to more than seven hundred beneficiaries across more than twelve states of the federation.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Oguguo made it clear that education is not a scam and that Anambra has the lowest out of school children in Nigeria because of educational foundations like “IGAHAF” appreciating Ozo Aguowo for helping government to give education accessibility as what he is doing is in line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision for education which is equipping the young ones to compete favourably on the global stage.
The Chairman on the occasion and National Democratic Congress Senatorial candidate for Anambra South in the 2027 general elections, Dr. Ebuka Onunkwo pointed out that the aims and objectives of IGAHAF aligns with his foundation, saying that apart from education, IGAHAF takes care of free health care for people, urging affluent Ndi Anambra to emulate the founder of the foundation for a better society.
According to the Keynote Speaker. Professor Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, who is the immediate past Anambra State Commissioner for Education, what IGAHAF is doing is service to humanity as they are touching the poorest of the poor, and that since the establishment of the foundation, it has proved that generosity is the bedrock through which the rich can serve the society, and noted that society needs more of IG Aguowo foundations because education is the surest way of ending intergenerational poverty.
The Executive Director of IGAHAF, Gloria Ugonnia Abanihe, added that the aim of the foundation is to have about ten thousand students that will enjoy educational scholarships under their scholarship funding programme, and that they want to provide free basic education to the less privileged in the society and to contribute, build up stability where necessary.
# The Ezeike-in-Council, Nibo Union Executive, Ndi Ozo Njualo, Odu Iyom, Nibo Chiefs and the entire Umuezeike have celebrated the 2026 Ili ji Ezeike Nibo.
The annual cultural event, which heralds the eating of the new yam in Nibo Community, Awka South Local Government Area, attracted illustrious sons and daughters of the town, as well as friends and well-wishers from within and outside the community.
The traditional ruler of Nibo, Eze Dr. Michael Ngene, Ezeike the Fourth, accompanied by his wife and other titled men of the town, made a grand entrance into the Nibo Civic Centre, venue of the festival, dancing to traditional music.
After the traditional greetings, Eze Ngene performed the kolanut rites and offered prayers for the wellbeing of his subjects.
He also appreciated the presence of the traditional rulers of Okpuno and Enugwu-Ukwu communities, Igwe Okafor and Igwe Ralph Ekpe respectively.
While commending the government of Governor Chukwuma Soludo for its developmental strides across Anambra State, Eze Ngene also spoke on issues affecting the community.
He alleged that members of the caretaker committee overseeing the activities of the town union were causing confusion and division in the community and advised them to retrace their steps and fulfil the original purpose for which they were constituted by the government.
The traditional Prime Minister of Nibo, Chief Robins Obi-Ezeani, explained that the new yam festival provides an opportunity for conviviality, unity and togetherness among members of the community.
He commended the traditional ruler for his leadership and urged the people to remain united for the good of all.
# To prepare her products for the ‘job market’, the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, CEI, has organized the “COOU 2026 Employment and Job Readiness Workshop for Graduating Students”.
The event, with the theme “From Classroom to Boardroom: Mastering the Secrets of Get-Hired and Stay-Hired in a Competitive Labour Market”, was held at the various campuses of the university and featured a CV clinic, networking opportunities, career readiness and mentorship, and practical knowledge for enterprise development.
Declaring the event open at the Awka campus of the university, the Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, COOU Igbariam Campus, Professor Kingsley Nwozor, noted that the Anambra Digital Tribe, One Youth Two Skills, and other youth empowerment initiatives of Governor Chukwuma Soludo are being replicated at COOU, and he urged participants and youths to be part of the progress, just as he restated that the university is committed to producing graduates who have value to offer to society.
While urging participants to make the best of the programme, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Kate Omenugha, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration and Environmental Sustainability, Professor Anselm Nweke, and the Provost of the College of Medicine, COOU, Professor Lawrence Ikeakor, noted that through the programme, the university is preparing its students for the moment and the future, and thanked CEI and IDK for the partnership for a greater tomorrow.
Noting that most Nigerian graduates are not ready for the job market, though they have good certificates, the CEO and Managing Consultant of IDK, Mrs. Chinwe Nweke, who commended the university authority for being creative and for embracing the opportunity it created, tasked the graduating students to use the programme to prepare themselves for the job market.
# The Anambra State chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has hosted its first-ever State Women Leaders/Deputies August Summit, held
at the Regional Office in Awka.
The summit, convened by the Acting APGA State Woman Leader, Lady Chinwe Umerie, brought together the 21 local government women leaders and their deputies to deliberate on the future of the party, as well as the role of women in the political activities of the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
Lady Umerie, in a communique issued at the end of the summit and read by the APGA women leaders, called for the empowerment of women as home and nation builders.
They urged the party to prioritize capacity building and create more economic opportunities for women.
The women leaders also clarified the APGA-APC alliance, reaffirming APGA’s support under Governor Chukwuma Soludo for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027 under the banner, “Progressives Working Together.”
However, they stated categorically that the alliance is strictly for President Tinubu’s re-election and does not amount to a merger between the two political parties.
They demanded clear boundaries to protect APGA candidates contesting from the Senate to the State Assembly levels, while also calling for regular training programmes for women leaders to prepare them for the 2027 elections and beyond.
Addressing the gathering, the State Chairman of APGA, Chief Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, announced plans by the party to inaugurate APGA women leaders across all polling units in the state.
Obi-Okoye explained that the initiative would enable the women leaders to work with party executives at the grassroots level towards achieving the party’s action plans during elections.
In her remarks, the Secretary to the Anambra State Government, Mrs Chiamaka Nnake, charged women to take the lead in shaping their future by actively participating in politics and occupying strategic positions where decisions affecting society are made.
