Former Anambra State governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has concluded a medical outreach that provided free surgeries to 65 children, marking the initiative as part of celebrations for his 65th birthday.
Obi disclosed the completion of the programme after attending a follow-up clinic and appreciation event at Mother Mary Hospital in Isolo, Lagos, describing the outcome as a moment of gratitude and reflection.
“I am deeply grateful to God Almighty for guiding the medical team throughout the process and for granting all 65 children safe and successful surgeries,” he said.
Surgeries targeted breathing and infection issues
According to Obi, the procedures were led by Dr Folaseye Adebayo and her medical team, and primarily involved adenotonsillectomy, a surgery that removes enlarged or chronically infected tonsils and adenoids. He said the condition can cause breathing difficulties, recurrent infections and sleep-related problems in children if left untreated.
Parents share testimonies
Obi said the appreciation programme was made memorable by parents who spoke about the impact of the surgeries on their children’s health.
“What made the occasion particularly touching was listening to parents share their testimonies and hearing how these procedures have improved their children’s health and quality of life,” he said.
He extended appreciation to the medical team, hospital management, parents and others who supported the initiative, singling out Dr Adebayo for particular thanks.
Birthday as an occasion to give back
Obi framed the initiative as part of a broader personal philosophy around marking birthdays.
“For me, birthdays are not merely occasions for celebration. They are opportunities to give back, touch lives, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others,” he said.
He added: “I thank God for the privilege of being part of this initiative and, most importantly, for the gift of 65 healthy and hopeful children.”
Obi closed his statement with a prayer for medical workers and a reiteration of his political slogan, saying “a new Nigeria is possible.”
