The Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to protecting the rights of the girl child, promoting her empowerment and creating opportunities for her to thrive.
Angel Network News (ANN) reports that Onyekesi stated this in her message commemorating the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child, where she highlighted the need for increased investment in girls’ education, healthcare, safety, protection and overall development.
The Commissioner noted that every girl deserves to grow up in an environment where her rights are respected, her voice is heard and her aspirations are supported, stressing that empowering girls is essential to building stronger families and a more prosperous society.
She called on parents, schools, communities, government institutions and other stakeholders to work collectively to protect girls from abuse, exploitation, violence and discrimination while ensuring that they have access to quality education and opportunities to achieve their full potential.
According to her, the celebration serves as a reminder that girls are not merely beneficiaries of development but also vital contributors to the future of Anambra State and Nigeria.
Onyekesi urged stakeholders to “invest in girls today,” emphasising that every girl should understand that she is seen, valued, capable and worthy of achieving her dreams.
She wished girls across Anambra State and beyond a happy International Day of the Girl Child, assuring them that the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare remains committed to promoting their rights, welfare, protection and empowerment.
