US President Donald Trump on Thursday urged Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota to resign immediately from Congress, accusing her of using a false name as a federal probe into her citizenship continues.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said: “Please inform the Speaker of the House of Representatives, James Michael Johnson, that the Dumocrat Party has just conceded her seat.” He added: “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, her real name, has openly admitted to FRAUD, and she will not be legally allowed to be a Member of this August Body from this point forth.”
The demand came as the Trump administration pursues an investigation aimed at potentially revoking Omar’s US citizenship and deporting her if evidence shows she or relatives misled immigration authorities during her naturalisation process.
Omar has described a predawn search of her Washington home as a scare tactic. “You don’t show up to somebody’s house that early in the morning unless you’re trying to freak them out,” she said in a television interview this week.
She said agents from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrived at about 6 a.m., after she had slept for only about two and a half hours. The agents seized 17 items, including her youngest daughter’s first phone, a camera belonging to her husband’s uncle from his Navy service, and a book her husband was using to learn Somali.
Jeanine Pirro, the US attorney in Washington, D.C., said on Fox News that questions surrounding Omar’s name form part of the ongoing inquiry. “So the question is, who is Ilhan Omar, and has she followed all of the laws as it relates to naturalization and immigration,” Pirro said.
According to the New York Post, it published the marriage certificate of the sister of Ilhan Omar’s ‘brother husband’ who lived with him in the UK.
She lists their father as ‘Nur Said Elmi’ and his says he is a “military officer”.
The investigation has drawn sharp political reactions, with Omar’s allies viewing the raid and related scrutiny as politically motivated.
