NPFL champions Enugu Rangers crashed out of the CAF Champions League on Friday after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Algeria’s MC Alger, losing 3-2 on aggregate.
The Flying Antelopes had taken a 2-0 lead from the first leg played in Abeokuta last weekend but failed to protect their advantage at the Ali La Pointe Stadium.
After a goalless first half, MC Alger overturned the deficit with three second-half goals. Chahreddine Boukholda opened the scoring in the 58th minute. Guinean forward Mohamed Bangoura equalised the aggregate score at 2-2 with six minutes remaining, before Soufiane Bayazid struck three minutes into stoppage time to complete the comeback.
The result ended Rangers’ hopes of reaching the group stage. MC Alger advanced and will now pursue a second continental title, 50 years after winning the competition in 1976.
